Lighting design - It is probably the most underrated aspect of interior design.

In practical terms lighting alone is able to transform a space in a far greater and more spectacular way than any floor, any wall and any ceiling finish or feature.

Lighting can add depth, texture, colour, warmth, and richness to a space.

Why would you spend money on a finish you can not really see?

It is pretty common but do not do this.

Tip: If you plan to carry out internal works always get an expert lighting designer to assist with your project. It will make everything else you do worthwhile.

Good design is when you can see them both.

They talk to each other but they retain their separate identity, style and character.

So that you can always tell them apart.

What is that you do not see?

Have a look at the photograph and there is something probably missing.

What is missing is a column to support the corner of the first floor above, just look at where there is a tap and the sink in the middle of the island unit, look up from there at the corner of the lower ceiling section.

What is hidden from view is a steel frame that travels up and then down in the floor and it then follows the outline of the first floor above before disappearing in the side walls.

You can not possibly know there is a steel frame in place but this steel frame is the reason this layout is completely open from back to front and from side to side.

Now, imagine having a column there and the space reads very differently.

Architecture is what you see. Architecture is also what you do not see.

A view. Through a space. And a space. And a space. To another space.

It is what I call an Alice in Wonderland effect, where a space feels small when you look at a number of closed doors in front of you but when one of the doors opens and your eye travels through it the same space feels larger and your brain perceives this space to be bigger.

Long views through spaces create a richness of experience just in an instance.

They also help you to orientate yourself as you walk in a room and this gives you a sense of understanding where you are and what is around you. This makes being in this space feel just right. Because your brain knows where you are. There is clarity.

I remember visiting the clients about a year after the works were completed to discuss some future work.

I had forgotten that their garden was done by then (Design by https://www.buckleydesignassociates.com/about) and as I walked through the house my eye caught the bold colours, textures and the still young plants in the rear garden.

It looked stunning. I took a few quick photos on my phone.

It was unexpected and a visual proof of how much the design of your garden can transform your interior spaces.

The garden always tends to be the stage, the place that is always in your field of vision and, often enough the background of your daily life.

It can add energy, a sense of calmness, and beauty to compliment whatever you decide to do with the rest of your home project.

What are the layout options?
Ask your architect to explain the layout options in regards to where the kitchen, dining and living areas can be located and how they could open up to the rear garden. Do you like open plan arrangements or would you also retain an “escape from everyone” evening/reading reception room? Understand the relative cost and structural implications for each option. Understand the “feel” of the various spaces, how they can be defined, what sightlines you can create, how the circulation feels like, which spaces have access to daylight and which spaces need to be cosy, how to make everything balanced, proportionate and “right”. 3D illustrations and fly-through visualisations are the best way to explore and understand the spaces you aim to create.
