My son enjoying a workshop on solar panels at the in their pop up shop in Covent Garden. He had a great time and we also bought some mini panels to add to the Ecoalex retrofit dolls house. Hope to have them working for my next workshop.

More exciting retrofit. Can you spot the insulated wall? Not really any clues but the wall on the left is the external wall insulated with 80mm of wood fibre insulation and then finished with lime plaster. All done by a local plasterer upskilling and learning new techniques.

This gorgeous green house has just been warmed up with a coat of render on top of external wall insulation. You can choose any colour you want (depending on local planning) and give your house a fantastic make over.

Adding a bit of biodiversity to our sexy retrofits, some lovely sedums and grasses on a Mediterranean style green roof retrofitted to a workshop in Marlow.

Look at these rippling pipes, clad in tight shiny insulation. A heat pump installation as part of a whole house retrofit we are doing in Hertfordshire. Walls and roof all upgraded and we got a good deal on this pump with Watret a local supplier. All working well and monitoring it for the winter to see how it performs and if we need any extra radiators. The monitoring is for Superhomes rating as well.

It feels like retrofit can be a bit underwhelming for people so I am starting a new campaign to encourage more people to make their homes warm and comfortable here we see some lovely white walls hiding gorgeous warm insulation making this house comfortable and lovely to be in.

A green roof I planted a year or two ago. Very sunny location so there more Mediterranean plants have been thriving.

New Air Source Heat Pump being installed in Hertfordshire. Tanks and plumbing this week. We upgraded most of the radiators last year but a few still need changing.

Exciting first heat pump installation in Hertfordshire. Working with the guys to get this certified to PAS2035. First surprise was the size of the soakaway required bit it's all ready now and the heat pump and cylinder are on site.
Next step to install the main unit outside. The main electricity supply to the house is being upgraded and then we will be good to go.
The house has been insulated gradually over the last ten years with wood fibre in the walls to work with the cedar cladding and carefully placed insulation in the different roof sections.

I have a Certificate of achievement! . ABBE Level 3 award in energy efficiency for older and traditional buildings. So I can give even more help and advice on improving old houses.

Poking around a house in South London for a retrofit today. Some interesting bits of insulation. This was under the floor which had 50mm of mineral wool throughout and then random bits of 100mm. A few gaps as well but not enough to make it worth while taking down all the plasterboard and replacing it.
Plenty of other parts with no insulation under the kitchen, round the stairs to the cellar and in bits of the loft so will concentrate on getting those right.

The Ecoalex energy efficient dolls house on the stand very pleased with the green roof and the external wall insulation, looking good. Ecodaughter has her beady eye on it though so not sure if that will last to the next exhibition.

We installed this roof in February and it had been thriving despite the harsh weather of mid summer. Apparently it went brown but soon recovered with the rain.

Stage 3 of the internal wall insulation project. Flexible wood fibre batts have been fitted into the timber frame and now rigid boards are being added to create a wall surface ready for plastering. All looking good.

Surveying houses for PAS2035 assessments today in Grayshott, gorgeous weather and spotted this little one in the timber frame. House was alive with bird song, and we know there is space behind the timbers. Will have to make sure there is space for them all with any insulation improvements.

On Thursday we went to Dulwich to build a green roof on an extension. This one had a couple of roof lights so we planned to use lots of plants with a bit of height. This one has some grasses to start it off and lots of allium bulbs should be appearing in a few months along with a wide variety of wild flowers from the seeds we scattered. We also added saxifrages and other low level plants to give some ground coverage. The client is planning a herb garden at the accessible end.
