'Am I Not a Man or a Brother?' Today we're looking at this powerful anti-slavery token created by the Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade established in 1787. According to the 'Revealing Histories' organisation, the token was 'intended to shame those who were involved in the slave trade' however, it 'had the negative effect of representing the enslaved as essentially passive.' The Abolition of the Slave Trade Act became law in 1807, although the institution of slavery was not officially abolished until 1833. The obverse features an enslaved person kneeling and in chains, and the reverse shows an image of a handshake. Around the outside is written 'May slavery and oppression cease throughout the world'.
