Nero, Gold Aureus, AD 54-68. Estimate: £5,000-7,000
Lot 199.
Nero is remembered as a hedonistic tyrant. While the accuracy of this assumption is hotly debated, what cannot be denied is his fondness for the arts. This gold Aureus was minted in the closing years of Nero’s reign and at first glance, depicts the Emperor standing, holding an olive branch of peace and wearing a radiate crown. It is, however, much more impressive. The Colossus of Nero was an enormous statue depicting the Emperor as the Sun God and it’s likely that this coin depicts the enormous monument. Following Nero’s downfall it was re-sculpted and reused, but this gold coin represents one of the few images of the now-lost statue.

Augustus, Silver Denarius, 27 BC – AD 14. Estimate: £2,500-3,500
Lot 174
One of the most significant power-plays by Augustus, Rome’s first Emperor, was to establish himself as the son of a god. Julius Caesar was Augustus’ adopted father, so by declaring Caesar a god, Augustus would become ‘Divi Filius’ or the ‘Son of a God’. This was celebrated across Rome’s coinage, including on this spectacular silver Denarius, which features the Emperor’s portrait (with the inscription ‘DIVI F’) juxtaposed with a youthful portrait of the deified Julius Caesar himself. Another fascinating feature of this coin type is the addition of ‘Caesar’s Comet’, which can be seen above his head – it appears as a star with a distinctive tail. This is a reference to the comet which was seen in the skies over Rome in 44 BC, and was interpreted as Caesar’s soul ascending to the heavens.

P. Licinius Nerva, Silver Denarius, 113-112 BC. Estimate: £180-200
Lot 107.

Coins of the Roman Republic predate those of the Roman Empire, and bear the portraits of gods and goddesses, mythical scenes and animals, rather than the heads of all-powerful emperors. This silver denarius, minted in 113-112 BC by the moneyer Publius Licinus Nerva depicts a voting scene. This was likely an attempt to sway Roman voters into casting their ballot in favour of him, or one of his allies. The reverse shows three figures, one, on the left, is collecting a ballot from an attendant, in the centre. To the right, a voter is placing his ballot in a ballot-box. It’s a fascinating miniature insight into the Roman voting system.

Lysimachos, Silver Tetradrachm, c. 306-281 BC. Estimate: £800-1,000

Alexander the Great’s short reign saw the creation of an empire which stretched from Greece to India, but his untimely death in 323 BC threw this into turmoil. His lands were carved up by Alexander’s most powerful generals, including Lysimachos, who inherited the lands of Thrace. Lysimachos issued silver coins in his name, but not bearing his own portrait. Instead, his coins bore the head of Alexander the Great himself, who by this point had been deified – he had been made a god. This is evident from the Horn of Ammon, connecting him to the God, Zeus Ammon, and his eyes, wide open, looking upwards towards the heavens.

Auction 115 – Ancient Coin Sale – Highlights
Lot 20.
Queen Philistis, Silver 16 Litrai, c. 240-218 BC. Estimate: £1,500-2,000
Little is known about Queen Philistis, wife of Hieron II, Tyrant of Syracuse. The limited information we do know about her comes from the coins issued in her name. Syracuse was the most important city on the Island of Sicily and was founded by Greek settlers. The city became renowned for culture and science, and issued what are considered to be some of the most beautiful coins of the Ancient Greek world. This exceptional silver coin of Philistis depicts the Queen wearing a veil, with a reverse depicting a chariot. It also exhibits the vibrant colours of a coin which has been stored in a coin cabinet for decades. This piece was purchased from the Bournemouth-based coin dealer, Paul Munro Walker, in 1972.

✨Italy, Venice, Paolo Renier (1779-1789), silver Osella for Murano, 1784.

Depicting a large rooster of Murano with a serpent in his beak and a fox on his back, above the arms of the Podestà and the Camerlengo surmounted by the arms of the Doge. On the reverse, there is a standard surmounted by a bucranium from which descend festoons with the four coats of arms of the Deputies. This is a Good Extremely Fine or better and extremely rare. One of the finest examples of this coin that has ever come to the market, possibly the finest known, surpassing the one depicted in Paolucci.

✨A silver Osella of Francesco Molin, from Venice, struck in 1653. ☀️
The reverse depiction stands as a metaphor of the rule of Heavens on Earth. In the ruling system of Venetian Republic, the Doge was appointed for life and held the privileges similar to those of European Kings. Venetian nobility strived to limit the absolute power of the Doge and succeeded in the second half of the 13th century to impose obligations of the Doge towards the noblemen. The Doge would promise that they would provide an annual donation of wild fowl to the noblemen which were very sought after in the game preserves of the lagoon. Gradually, the practice turned instead into a monetary gift: the silver Osella.

In the first of this series we take a look at technical terms known to numismatists. One term in numismatics is "exergue," which refers to the space on a coin beneath the main design, often used for inscriptions, mint marks, or additional symbols. It plays a crucial role in identifying and categorizing coins, providing valuable information about their origin and historical context.

In Ancient Rome, the term "Salus" was commonly associated with good health, well-being, and prosperity. Salus was also revered as the Roman goddess of health and prosperity, often depicted holding a patera (sacrificial bowl) and a snake. On behalf of Baldwin's we wish to wish good health and prosperity, to our customers, followers and staff.
