Happily celebrating the return of El Salvador coffee season by re-reading our journal piece exploring the story of this small but mighty coffee producing country.

"A rich and interesting history of coffee production, El Salvador is a renowned specialty producer famed for quality of crop and relatively small production sites, allowing there to be a real investment into diverse varieties and technologically advanced processing methods in recent years. This makes it perfectly placed to produce stand-out specialty and we’ve had some memorable coffees over the years, most notably from the Salaverria family, owners of JASAL coffee."

Link in bio to read on ...

You can find two of the Salaverria families coffees in our new coffee line up, with their naturally processed Buena Vista featuring as our latest adventurous Fields and Las Ranas appearing as 50% of our super smooth autumnal Broadway Blend.

When we're talking about carbon emissions, we need to talk about milk.

As part of our real-time emissions tracking programme we've been tracking the carbon impact from our Broadway Market cafe (as well as our Head Office and Roastery locations).

This means we can track the impact of our menu items on the planet. Last week, of the 320g of average CO2 per cup of coffee we sold, 47% of emissions came from milk. These statistics taking into account an average of all our coffees sold over a 7 day period and consider our split between dairy and oat milk.

If you're looking for a simple and easy switch to reduce the carbon emissions on your daily cup of coffee, try mixing up your flat white or a latte for a cortado or piccolo. Or skip the milk altogether and take your coffee black. We also offer an iced flat white for a lovely cool drink, without significantly less milk content than the favoured iced latte.

Small changes. Big long term impact.

Dreamy scenes from a carbon negative coffee farm nestled between two rivers high on the slopes of the Turrialba Volcano in Costa Rica 🌿

This coffee showcases a truly unique processing method. As part of their exceptional biodiversity practice at the farm Aquiares grow a small crop of Eucalyptus, as well as other herbal crops such as Lemon Verbena and Lemongrass, for their essential oils side hustle. An extract of Eucalyptus infused water (a natural bi-product of the essential oil making process) is added to the fermentation of this coffee to infuse and uplift the already aromatic profile.

We were lucky enough to meet producer Diego in-person at last month's Cupping Club, where we cupped a selection of coffees from the farm including their experimental micro-lots. This was the stand-out winner on the table. A subtly herbal yet bright profile that was unlike any coffee we’ve tried before.

Two new coffees with a story to tell ...

We're welcoming back a firm favourite in experimental processing as our latest edition of The Fields. Climpsons classic The Baron takes on a carbonic maceration fermentation process using brettanomyces yeasts for a full bodied and seriously funky espresso, that works a treat for filter too. We've been working closely with the team over the last 5 years to develop this coffee through the taste tests and experiments in wild processing.

And another returning favourite with La Cumbre from Huehuetenango in Guatemala for a smooth and sophisticated filter offering. The product of high altitude and precision picking and processing by Sotero Cano and the team.

Introducing our next Showstopper Coffee .... Hello La Esperanza 👋

This unique Laurina coffee from world-renowned ultra specialty producers in Colombia uses a natural process, where cherries are meticulously picked at a purple grape colour. Laurina is not a widely available variety, due to its lower yields and precision requirements in growing conditions.

Best known for its strikingly delicate profile as well as a distinctly low caffeine content. This coffee has a dry matter basis of 0.5-0.7% in comparison to Bourbon’s roughly 1.2%. All the sophistication with just half the caffeine. Pretty sure this means we can drink twice as much of it?

Image from can you spot another unique feature of this variety? Laurina can be identified through the unusual Christmas tree-like shape of the plant 🌲

Our latest journal article from Climpsons Marketing Manager Jo shares her insights on what's changing in the domestic specialty coffee scene in India.

As the sixth largest producer in the world, historically 80% of India's coffee would be grown for export outside of the country. In 2024 this has now shifted to just 60% of production. All thanks to the growing interest in specialty coffee and the culture around it.

We've luckily managed to get hold of some stand-out coffee from the rapidly emerging specialty region through our importing partners

Let’s talk

This month we’re sharing more about what achieving B Corp looks like... behind the label. As part of a B Corp application there is a chance to specialise through particular impact areas, choosing those that are most relevant to your business. One area we chose to work with is the way we support our wonderful team and our overall workplace culture 🧡

“Workplace culture: refers to the attitudes, beliefs, and values within a workplace that influence many aspects of workers’ experiences, such as those related to workers’ sense of satisfaction, well-being, mental health, belonging, shared purpose, psychological safety, engagement, and happiness.”

For us, a positive and impactful workplace culture begins in the hiring process. We look to advertise using a wide range of platforms, from coffee specific job boards to our local job centre. This means our vacancies are seen by a more diverse group of applicants, attracting those that may not have experience within specialty coffee, but could have just the right skills we are looking for to apply for roles. This has led to the diverse backgrounds we have at the company today. We are particularly proud of the fact that more than half of our workers are women and this figure is also reflected in our management roles 💪

For our employees, we seek to make specialty coffee a life-long career with many of our team working through various roles across the business. Many of our baristas have moved to roasting coffee, working in our webshop dispatch, training in equipment tech and machine maintenance to digital marketing. This means an investment in on-going training and development in job specific skills as well as holding regular check-ins with a manager to set goals and open the floor to discuss any issues that might be occurring at home or work.
