Our Heritage
The Lord Raglan is one of the oldest tavern sites in the City. Writing in The Morning Post 12/4/1923 Mr. E V. Lukas said: "It has been here longer than any other hostelry in the metropolis, it was often visited by Shakespeare and his friends
The house was originally known as The Bush, but after the ex*****on of Charles I, the royalist landlord changed the name to the Mourning Bush and painted the sign black as a mark of respect.
It then became The Lord Raglan" to commemorate Lord Fitzroy Somerset to became 1st Baron Raglan in 1852.
The cellars of the pub date from the original building and incorporate parts of the old roman wall The present building was constructed in 1855, apparently on top of the foundations cellars of an earlier establishment called the Fountain.
