A shout out to Charlotte who I met at the bushcraft show. Fantastic hedgerows cocktails at her pop up bar. My favorite was the Hedgerow stinger… made with stinging nettles! As Charlotte said, if they didn’t grow abundantly in the UK we would be importing them as super food! So embrace this overlooked food source!

I am so happy I took my 14 month year old to the bushcraft show! I love sharing my passion for the outdoors and nature with her!! She loved camping🏕️, seeing the birds of prey 🦅 and sitting by the fire 🔥 (and checking out the program 🤣)

Had a great team building session with the volunteers who work at the food bank at Granby community hub in a local community garden 🪴 The group made fire together and cooked fish 🐟 over the fire 🔥 for lunch

Meet Kat, one of the LB instructors. It was a muddy day on Sunday but lovely feedback from the parents: Just a note to say thank you so much for such a brilliant party! It was pouring with rain, Kat already had a plan by the time we got there. The boys LOVED it, it was the perfect party for 6 year olds. Kat was brilliant with them, keeping the rounded up and on task, showing and teaching them about the forest. She tailored the program so they could have free play while learning and working together at the same time. They all loved learning to make a fire too. Sausages and hot dogs cooking over the fire, all of it! Paul was brilliant with them too. And the Ukulele songs were great fun. The boys were singing the songs still this morning, according to parents. The rain and mud didn’t bother anyone at all. I think these boys will remember this party as a highlight of their childhood. And it definitely inspired the explorer in all of them.

This is the oldest and largest London Plane tree in England! Dating back to about 1685 it’s in London and was on land that used to belong to the Archbishop of Canterbury. It’s last measurement was 35m high and 8.23m in girth. If any tree needs a hug, it’s definitely this one!!! Did you know London Plane tree bark can absorb some of the pollutants rather than us breathing it in? Another reason to give thanks to this beauty! Anyone else hugged a tree lately?

Scary hey? I had a go at at making clay but I didn’t get a large amount for my first go. So thought I would make a natural face mask… who said a bushcraft facial is not a thing 😃

Had three weeks in the outer Hebrides recently. Wild camping, swimming, fires on the beach, being nomads… loved every day! It’s so important to step out of day to day modern life and see how it’s the simple things in life can give the most pleasure. It wasn’t always perfect, times being eaten alive by midges springs to mind… but an unbeatable trip! Are you up to being wild for a week or two?

What a fun team to work with! We taught 1400 young people this month on the NCS programme. All of our instructors love inspiring and enthusing young people about the amazing natural world we live in. I strongly believe that the more people develop a relationship with nature the more our human race will care and nurture it… after all it’s hard to develop a relationship with something you know nothing or little about. I was so impressed with the young people getting so involved with a variety of skills from fire lighting, shelter building, foraging and more

Last week we had to change our programme as there was a total fire ban in the camp we were in. So solar s’mores ovens were made and bramble tension plates to serve them on! It’s all about adapting to our environment. Without our ancestors ability to adapt we wouldn’t be here today (although they wouldn’t have had the luxury of a s’more 🤣)

Foraging with the London Bushcraft team last week in between a busy few days

London Bushcraft is working in partnership with Nick Carter’s Wild Weekends this week. Great ethos of the camps; teaching kindness, resilience, team work and empathy while doing lots of fun adventurous activities. They built these great shelters and 40 children slept out in the shelters they made. None of the children were worried about bugs as the camp focused on bravery and resilience. Feel happy we could be part of your camp!

Mental health awareness week: Connecting with nature and others are powerfully protective for one’s mental well-being. Until approximately 12,000 years ago, all humans practiced hunting and gathering in groups. That may seem like a long time ago but when put into perspective that represents only 0.2% of time we haven’t been immersed in nature on a constant, daily basis. If we compare this to the time modern humans have existed that’s only 6% of the time we haven’t been living as hunters and gatherers. Connect with nature and find your tribe, it’s in out blood!

Foraging three cornered leek on my bike 🚲 ride to have with eggs 🥚 on toast for breakfast. Foraging has a wonderful way to connect you with the passage of time. As I picked my accompaniment to my breakfast I mused that I could recall when I foraged for this plant one year ago… such a beautiful way to connect with time.
