Chelsea Textiles

Chelsea Textiles was formed in 1990 to faithfully recreate antique textiles, cushions and furnishing

Chelsea Textiles is a family firm, started by Mona Perlhagen, who moved to London from New York, where she had been a fashion buyer for Bloomingdale’s. She identified a need for perfect recreations of antique embroidered fabrics and cushions, to complement traditional interiors, and set about researching and sourcing authentic materials and the world’s best craftsmen, to produce hand-embroidered fabrics of the same quality as those of the 17th and 18th centuries.

Toile de Joie is a whimsical printed fabric and wallpaper from the mind of influential Catalan artist Ramiro Fernandez Saus , capturing the imaginative thrill of discovering unexplored lands.
-
The fabric, now also available as a wallpaper in a smaller scale, becomes a jungle harbouring hidden locations, figures & animals that reveal themselves the more the scene is explored.

“My characters are poetic figures: they don’t have a logical explanation. They arrive to me in an intuitive way and most of the time I don’t know why. But I can always tell for sure if they are going to enlighten the mystery in the painting:”
- Ramiro Fernandez Saus

Chelsea Textiles launched its first collection of Gustavian furniture in 2004. Since that time, the collection has grown, incorporating other Swedish periods such as Baroque and Rococo.
The combination of muted colours, elegant silhouettes, and the practicality of Gustavian furniture makes it equally at home in traditional rooms as more contemporary settings.

Made by hand using sustainable materials, each piece is uniquely hand-painted and hand-distressed by master craftsmen.
The worn paint finish found in the original pieces is faithfully reproduced with multiple layers of paint and standing to achieve an authentic look.

Celebrate World Embroidery Day with Chelsea Textiles

Over the past thirty years, Chelsea Textiles has faithfully recreated rare antique embroideries of the Queen Anne, William and Mary, and Louis the 16th periods, sourced through extensive research into French and English archives.

The company prides itself on using only authentic materials, handworked by master craftsmen into unique pieces which will stand the test of time, to become antique textiles for future generations.

Pictured above is the ornate Palm Tree of Life, featuring a wonderful variety of exotic birds, wonderfully brought to life by master embroiderers.

Palm Tree of Life is available in two colourways.

Venetian Damask by for Chelsea Textiles - Inspired by the traditions of printed papers & woven silk damask in Venice.

Damask, named after the city of Damascus where it was made from the middle ages onward, takes shapes derived from nature and abstracted into patterns over hundreds of years, travelling from east to west along the silk road, bringing its exotic garden of idealised plant forms to the finest medieval interiors.

The ornate Venetian Damask fabric is printed in England on three linen grounds across a palette of six colours, and is also available as a beautiful fine-art wallpaper.

Kit Kemp’s collection for Chelsea Textiles is inspired by her love of the magical and lyrical, and of animals, both real and imaginary.

Featuring a series of characters and patterns that have a primitive, almost folkloric feel, the collection shows a series of narratives that playfully unfold, from a star gazing dog and a sailor’s farewell, to mythical creatures and a modern take on a Suzani.

Chelsea Textiles’ iconic Wisteria hand-embroidered wallpaper is also available as a wonderfully detailed wallpaper.

Traditionally printed England, Chelsea Textiles’ Wisteria wallpaper mimics the original hand-embroidered version, giving the illusion of raised French knots and stitch work.

Wisteria wallpaper is available in Chelsea Textiles’ signature muted colours, perfectly complementing its Essentials fabric collections.

Throughout the London Craft Week, Chelsea Textiles played host to mesmerising live demonstrations of hand-embroidery led by one of the company’s master embroiderers.

The public enjoyed daily presentations of this timeless artform, exploring both the wonderful embroideries on show and the various techniques used to create them.

Chelsea Textiles would like to thank Abu Bakkar for journeying to London to demonsrate his wonderful artisanal skills.

Revisiting Verdant, the flourishing new addition to Chelsea Textile’s collaboration with Robert Kime.

In a careful reimagining of an early 18th century English textile, this large-scale, hand-embroidered linen fabric features delicate florals in an open, yet sprawling design.

Available in two colourways:

Depicted here with a palette warm in rich golds and sun-drenched greens, Verdant in Green conjures the pastoral image of a wild field in midsummer.

Replete in serene blues and delicate silvers, Verdant in Blue evokes fresh white blossom, or the crispness of an early morning frost.
