Friday 27th October marked a very special day for many of our Rockwatchers and not just because for most it was half term, but because it was the Rockstars Young Geologists’ Competition Prize Giving ceremony.

Hosted by its long-term sponsors at the Anglo American Foundation offices in London, the Rockwatch annual Rockstars Competition Prize Giving Ceremony was an opportunity to celebrate and applaud the creative and insightful efforts of our young geologists.

You can read more about the day on the Rockwatch website and also watch this year’s Rockstars Competition Showcase.

🌟🌋🦕 Exciting News for Rockwatch Followers! 🦕🌋🌟

We are thrilled to announce the launch of the Rockstars Young Geologists’ Competition 2023 Showcase, a short film that celebrates the incredible entries from the children and young people who took part in this year’s competition. Now in its 13th year, the competition is generously sponsored by the Anglo American Foundation, and we thank them for their continued support.

The Rockstars Competition is designed to inspire and encourage our young members to explore and share a geological topic of their choice over the summer holidays. We are truly amazed by the outstanding entries received this year, and we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to all participants for their hard work and dedication.

Your entries on geological landforms such as mountains, caves, and volcanoes, the geology of different places including Yorkshire’s Jurassic Coast and mining at Cligga Head, the process of fossilization and fossil hunting, the marvels of minerals and rocks, and of course, awe-inspiring dinosaurs, both entertained and inspired us.

This showcase is a celebration of your hard work, dedication, and your commitment to exploring the wonders of our planet and all of its geodiversity.

Now, without further ado, we invite you to sit back and enjoy watching this year’s Rockstars Competition Showcase 2023 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LwgoHzdH5Y0&t=1s

Thank you again to all the participants, their families, and our sponsors for making the Rockstars Young Geologists’ Competition possible.

Stay curious, keep exploring, and always remember: you rock! 🌍🤘

Have you wondered what makes the English Riviera so special?
Do want to know more about our Geology?

In celebration of International join the world renowned Prof Malcolm Hart for an online talk and discussion, learning more about the geodiversity of our wonderful region.

🪨 Topic: The Geodiversity of the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark
🕰️ Time: Monday Oct 9, 2023 19:00 (GMT)

While the Geopark has a range of diverse geology it is particularly the Devonian for which it is known as, in 1839, when Sedgwick and Murchison established the Devonian System they cited many of the fossil-rich localities within South Devon’s UNESCO Geopark. The coral assemblages, in particular, record the presence of Devonian reefal environments formed when the area was immediately south of the Equator. The geological record of the Geopark is a record of the subsequent migration of the area to the present latitude.

Today, it is the record of climate change and fluctuating sea levels that is the major interest with the Geopark being one of the few places in Europe where terrestrial cave deposits (with megafauna and hominin remains) are in close proximity to caves that record marine conditions during glacial/interglacial cycles.
