We are proud to announce that Ms Naomi Tan was an invited speaker and moderator at the prestigious 5th World Congress of Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (WCPOS V) in Kuala Lumpur last week! 🎉

Organised by the World Society of Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (WSPOS), this event gathered over 1,200 paediatric ophthalmologists, researchers, and industry leaders from around the globe to discuss pioneering research and innovative clinical practices.

Ms Tan shared her expertise on globe rupture, emphasising the importance of accurate history-taking to determine open globe injuries in children. She discussed high-risk mechanisms like high-force blunt injury, high-velocity projectiles, sharp objects, and contamination.

Highlighting key surgical principles, Ms Tan advised minimal pressure on the globe, maximum exposure, and preserving viable tissue with sutures, glue, or tectonic grafts. She also stressed caution when examining awake patients and recommended a low threshold for anesthesia and primary repair to avoid occult injuries.

We greatly appreciate Ms Naomi Tan's significant contributions to pediatric ophthalmology and the exceptional insights she shared at important event.

☀️I wear sunscreen every day and so do my clinic nurse and receptionist.

We work in the clinic from about 9am to 5pm – so you might ask why on earth are we putting on sunscreen? The reason is that on the way to the clinic, or during our lunch break and at the end of the afternoon, we go outside. When we are outside the sun may be shining, so it would make sense to put on sunscreen, but we also wear it on days when it is cloudy and even on rainy days.

What is the mystery all about?

The mystery is that we are protecting our skin from both UVA and UVB rays. This is because UVA penetrates through the clouds and rain and can cause ageing and wrinkling through photodamage – or changes to the skin through consistent exposure to harmful rays. UVB rays are mostly present when it is sunny and cause the skin to tan but also contribute to the development of skin cancer.

We strongly advise that you choose a sunscreen with an SPF of 50 or 50+ for maximum protection from the harmful effects of both UVA and UVB rays. This is the best course of action to take if you want to safeguard against wrinkles and photodamage and reduce the risk of precancerous skin lesions developing.

There are many good brands of SPF 50 and 50+ sunscreen, and I can recommend what I have used myself: ISDIN 5 star Fusion water Eye Protect (a small blue bottle, made in Spain). It does not sting the eyes and is very light. Used daily often as a moisturiser and sunscreen protection.

I wear sunscreen every day because I want my skin to feel and look healthy and I want to protect it as much as possible against the ageing effects of UVA and sun-damaging cellular level of UVB for the next thirty years.

📚Ptosis: FAQs

What is Ptosis?

Ptosis is a medical eye issue that can affect the upper eyelids, in both adults and children. Also known as droopy eyelids, this condition may affect one or both upper eyelids. The condition may develop during the natural ageing process or be congenital, meaning a person is born with it and can cause the upper eyelid tendon to stretch or be inelastic, resulting in eyelid droopiness.

What is ptosis surgery?

Ptosis surgery is a procedure adjusting the muscles or fine aponeurosis tendons responsible for lifting the eyelid. Our oculoplastic consultants recommend this treatment to elevate the eyelid when drooping is causing problems with the eyesight or an unsightly asymmetry or appearance.

Does ptosis surgery hurt?

You will not feel pain during the treatment as an anaesthetic is injected into the eyelid region. For adults patients who are awake and under local anaesthesia may experience tugging sensations. Children are administered general anaesthetic.
For the first few days following the treatment, you will likely experience mild pain and discomfort, but this is nothing that regular paracetamol cannot alleviate.

When can I return to work?

Ptosis surgery requires a five to ten-day recovery time, during which we advise you to take off work. However, this depends on you and is determined individually. We generally recommend taking things slow for a few days and refraining from strenuous activities like heavy lifting or exercise.
