We are so pleased to have had further support from Jolly Phonics to train teachers up as phonics trainers this month!

Developing new trainers in-country means that we can reach more teachers, be adaptable to changing circumstances, and continue building the capacity of education professionals in Ethiopia.

Trainees who achieve Jolly Phonics certification will support our rollout of teacher training in the next academic year.

Our UK office has been working to improve our Diversity, Equality and Inclusion practices.

We are pleased to share tangible changes such as:
- partnerships that enable us to offer paid internships to students who can most benefit from the experience;
- revised recruitment procedures to improve inclusivity; and
- a strategy with building the capacity of our Ethiopian team at it's heart, so that we can be more locally led in our approach.

The work is not done, but we will continue to review and improve. Read our update here: https://twlethiopia.org/blog/2024/05/23/an-update-on-our-equality-diversity-and-inclusion/

Good news from Gondar as the construction of a new library at Meseret School is complete!

We are so pleased to deliver such a high quality library in the current difficult circumstances and hope it will give renewed hope and energy for the students that their futures are worth investing in!

Students and teachers at the school have visted other local libraries and given their feedback about what they'd like to see in their school library. Over summer will work with them to design the space, furnish and stock it with books and resources to create a bright, comfortable and productive space that students and teachers will be proud to use!

Thank you to our partners and for supporting the project.

A huge congratulations to our supporter James who cycled an incredible 100 miles this Sunday, from London to Essex, and raised an amazing £985 for our work in the process!

"On balance the whole ride was a great experience as I really enjoyed from 40kms to 120kms... can't say I enjoyed the last 25kms, but it is done! I'm very pleased to say that I've beaten my fundraising target for Together We Learn of £800, but it is still possible to donate - so if anyone would like to donate see links below... all sponsorship is gladly accepted!"

The funds James has raised will help us to arrange extra tutorial support for students in exam years this summer, whose learning has been interrupted due to conflict.

Thank you James!

We are so pleased when our school links can lead to additional benefits for students. Thank you to Impington Village College for their gift of 6 computers for their link school Ada Model in Bishoftu.

The school link has been going for 13 years and we are hopeful they may do another teacher vist to Ethiopia next year.

In the meantime, we are receiving some beautiful shared learning activities from all of our UK link schools, and look forward to sharing them with the students in the Ethiopian schools before the end of the year.

Reusable pads for rural girls! 👧🏾🩸

This March we were able to provide reusable period packs to 50 girls from rural areas thanks to funding from Q3 Strategy.

We distributed reusable period packs, pants and bags alongside training to help girls understand the menstrual cycle, track their periods and manage them with confidence without missing school.

88% of girls said they learnt something new during the training 92% reported they now had enough to be happy and healthy during their period.

The teacher and director at the school also reported that they had learnt something new, they weren't aware of reusable pads before, and felt they were an ideal solution for students.

The pads were sourced from local social enterprise so had the double benefit of supporting women's employment in Ethiopia.

We really appreciate being able to provide such necessary and valuable resources for girls to enable them to thrive in their education.

If you want to help us do more of this, you can donate a pack or fund a distribution session, click the link in our bio to give via our online shop!

Happy International Women's Day!

Together We Learn is a proudly women-led organisation. Read our blog to meet one of the women who leads us - Elsa who sits on our UK board - in an interview she did recently for our School Linking newsletter: https://twlethiopia.org/blog/2024/01/29/meet-our-trustee-elsa/

As an organisation, we work on many fronts to address the various barriers to accessing quality education in Ethiopia. While gender parity in education is improving, only 8% of leaders in primary and secondary schools in Ethiopia are female. As we know, 'if you can't see it, you can't be it', which is why we run our Future Girls project, raising awareness among boys, girls and teachers about the issues girls face, and building confidence for female students to advocate for their rights and build their aspirations for the future!

It has been four years since we've been able to start a new construction project, due to the pandemic and conflict. So we are delighted to share progress now on our latest project, building a library for students at Meseret School in Gondar!

The library will provide a space for study and books for 1,800 pupils from kindergarten to Grade 8, as well as their teachers, and will serve as a reading centre for the community on weekends.

Our team are closely monitoring construction progress, and we are delighted with how well things are going. It is nothing short of amazing that our team are able to continue delivering such projects benefitting the community during such difficult circumstances in the Amhara region.

Thank you to Wonfel Aid / ወንፈል ተራድዖ and others for supporting the project. We look forward to sharing progress with you!

2024 is the African Union's Year of Education.

It is great to see this priority set across the continent. Ethiopia has made remarkable progress in access to primary level education. There is still a lot of work to do to maintain that access and to now improve the quality of education. We're glad to see that so many of our programmes are addressing the same areas that have been identified as key to improving education in Africa.

We wish all of our supporters a very Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and Melkam Genna! 🎄

As we come to the end of the year, we would like to take a moment to appreciate the exceptional children, families and teachers in Ethiopia. They have been incredible in a year that has brought conflict and tragedy to the country. Throughout unimaginable circumstances they remained focussed and committed to learning and improving education. We remain hopeful for a more positive year ahead.

2023 has not been an easy year for many of our supporters either. Thank you for continuing to support Together We Learn this year. It really means a lot.

We look forward to 2024, the work we will continue to deliver for children in Ethiopia, and the progress we will keep pushing for, with your help!
