A story of hope at Clink Gardens, HMP Send "I am an ex-offender, who resided at HMP Send. I first arrived there just over a year into my sentence, a shy and broken woman, with no confidence and minimal hope for the future. I

Some incredibly exciting news this . Two Clink Charity students have become the first-ever female apprentices in prison, as they begin their apprenticeship journey with us, alongside HIT Training.

We are incredibly proud of them both and can’t wait to celebrate their achievements.

They said: “I’m excited to start my apprenticeship journey and see how much I can progress. The apprenticeship has given me a better outlook on life, knowing in such a dull light I can still shine bright and better myself. Both of my grandparents were chefs and always used to have me cooking and baking with them when I was younger. My goals are to keep progressing through my journey and learn new skills each week. I am hoping on release I can work towards owning my own catering business.”

“I really can’t wait to start my next journey on the apprenticeship. When I got offered this opportunity to start the apprenticeship, I took it straight away - doing this with the Clink has been one of my ultimate goals. I will continue to be a chef for the rest of my life and will work to get every qualification I can. I know this apprenticeship will take me to a brilliant job in the future and I will be set up for life, I can’t wait for this journey.”

“I have always had a passion to help those in need, to guide them in the right direction. So many ex-offenders are just left to continue with their rehabilitation on their own once they are released, which can be very hard. It’s so important that The Clink Charity continues to support them in so many ways.

“I am passionate about working with people in prison because I feel it’s crucial to show them there are people who do care, even though at some point they may have chosen the wrong path."

“International Women’s Day is important to me because it shows how women are being empowered and inspired by each other more every day - and that we are capable of doing the same jobs as men.”

International Women's Day 2024 - meet Grace To help recognise and celebrate International Women's Day 2024, we gathered some contributions from the fantastic women at The Clink Charity.

"The impact of The Clink Horticulture delivery at HMP Send is immense. As well as the vocational qualifications, the care and time invested in the women increases the confidence and provides huge therapeutic benefits.

"We witness women not only grow produce but grow in themselves. Seeing their progress and the pride in what they are achieving is my favourite part of my job."

In the build up to International Women’s Day on Friday, we are recognising our wonderful staff from across the charity. First up, it’s Emma from our Support and Mentoring Team.

“International Women's Day is an opportunity for society to celebrate the achievements, advancements and contributions of women, while raising awareness of the barriers many still face.

“Women in prison are often victims of much more serious offences than those they are accused of committing. They face numerous issues in accessing the services they need to rebuild their lives.

“I enjoy my role at The Clink because it’s making a positive difference, helping people to overcome adversity to live their life to the fullest. Having worked in the criminal justice system for many years, I wanted a role where I could be part of a team where we believe anything is possible. Everyone deserves a chance to have their voice heard and to change their future.”

The Clink was mentioned on BBC Newscast earlier this week, during a discussion about the UK prison system and whether our efforts to rehabilitate people in prison are truly effective.

Forget the Ritz. I dined at a restaurant inside a London prison, and it's the best place to eat in the city. London is home to plenty of famous restaurants, but most tourists probably don't know about the hidden gem located inside Brixton Prison: The Clink.

The Clink Charity has identified the first students who will take part in its new apprenticeship programme, run in partnership with HIT Training. This will be the first time that apprenticeships have been delivered to serving prisoners.
