INTBAU Summer School Incubator: Inspiring the creation of new education programmes globally.

From 13-17 August 2024, the Incubator programme brought together INTBAU Chapter representatives from Australia, Austria, Brazil, Finland, Germany, Qatar, Romania, and Belgium in the picturesque cities of Utrecht and Bruges. Delegates met to discuss and share insights on educational initiatives focused on traditional building, architecture, and urbanism, and to exchange best practices for launching new programmes globally.

INTBAU Executive Director Alexander Lamont Bishop remarked: ‘The INTBAU Incubator allowed us to peer behind the curtain of successful summer schools run by our chapters, in the expectation of expanding that offer in 2025 and beyond. The INTBAU network is committed to strengthening the pipeline of practitioners with training in traditional building, architecture and urbanism, in the belief that traditional architecture builds communities, helps individuals identify with their surroundings, and offers an inherent form of sustainability based on local knowledge of materials, climates, and contexts.’

Chapters in Australia, the Netherlands, and Belgium shared their experiences, while newcomers from Brazil, Romania, and Finland acquired valuable knowledge on developing impactful programmes. Isabelle from INTBAU Brazil said, ‘Witnessing how established programmes operate, particularly in Utrecht and Bruges, provided us with a clear blueprint for our own projects in Brazil.’

The Incubator focused on addressing gaps in modern education by launching new summer schools, exploring partnership models with academic institutions, and connecting alumni with future opportunities. The event culminated with the Great Estival Celebration in Bruges, organised by INTBAU Belgium, featuring student projects judged by an international jury, followed by the unveiling of “The Ark” exhibition.

Stay tuned as INTBAU Chapters continue to develop these innovative programmes that aim to redefine the role of traditional building in today’s built environment.

Special thanks to and for their warm hospitality.

JOIN US: TAG Talk ‘An Inheritable City, Not Just a Sustainable One’ by Ettore Maria Mazzola, exploring lessons from early 20th-century Rome for modern urban regeneration.

19:00 UK time on Thursday, 19th September 2024, organised by the Traditional Architecture Group, host to INTBAU UK.

As we strive for more sustainable urban environments, integrating the urban, economic, social, and environmental lessons from Rome’s 1908-1926 era can provide valuable insights. These historical lessons offer strategies that are adaptable to today’s needs, promoting a richer and more respectful approach to urban regeneration.

This presentation will delve into how techniques and materials from early 20th-century Rome, documented in Carlo Formenti’s 1909 handbooks, can be applied to current urban projects. It emphasises adapting historical wisdom to local contexts rather than seeking universal solutions. Ettore Maria Mazzola will share his methodology, developed through his work and teaching at the University of Notre Dame, which demonstrates how these principles can be internationally relevant.

Full information and RSVP via the link in our bio, or visit

About the speaker:

Arch. Ettore Maria Mazzola is an architect, urbanist, restorer, and author with extensive experience in urban and architectural projects across Italy and internationally. He has contributed to numerous restoration projects and has been involved in significant urban planning efforts, including work in the Moscow Region and advisory roles for UNESCO. Mazzola is Vice President of A.U.T., a member of various committees, and has been recognised for his contributions to urbanism and preservation.

Iberian Summer School in Arcos de Valdevez, Portugal, organised by the Traditional Building Cultures Foundation in collaboration with INTBAU Portugal and INTBAU Spain.

From 8 to 21 July 2024, 25 students from 14 countries gathered in Portugal to develop and hone their skills as traditional practitioners.

The programme focused on exploring the region's traditional urban design, architecture, and construction details, with a focus on hand-drawing. The goal was to help participants get to know the unique features and character of the local architecture.

Experts in local vernacular architecture, landscape, and building techniques delivered lectures and conducted various workshops on related topics. During the first week, several trips were organised around the region, allowing for the study and drawing of local architecture in various locations.

In the second week, students used their previous work to collaborate on an urban design proposal for Peneda, the host locality. They also engaged with local residents to tailor the proposal to the community's needs.

Watch the video recap and be inspired by the stunning Portuguese scenery and the dedicated students working to keep traditions alive: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMSJu_uilXU&t=64s

Summer School on Traditional Architecture and Building Techniques, hosted by INTBAU Norge

From 4-11 July, 2024, architecture students from Norway, Sweden, and the Netherlands gathered in Fredrikstad, Norway, to delve into classical and vernacular design, practice, and new urbanism. The participants explored various design strategies on an infill site, with many focusing on façade design to enhance the urban landscape, while others aimed to complete a project on the site.

The result? A beautiful collection of watercolours envisioning potential projects for the historic fortress area.

Hands-on Learning

True to the INTBAU tradition, the Fredrikstad summer school featured a module on traditional crafts. Throughout the week, students worked alongside professional timber joiners to raise a timber pavilion—a thoughtful addition to the historic Onsøy vicar's seat. Designed by Olav Bjerve and Sødal, the pavilion was a highlight of the hands-on experience.

For many students, this was their first foray into traditional architecture. Oscar Olderøy, now in his third year at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, reflected on the experience:

"My experience was truly exceptional, blending both the theoretical and practical aspects of traditional architecture and urban development. The knowledge imparted by INTBAU Norway is invaluable, and I believe I speak for many when I say we aspire to be a new generation of architects committed to creating beautiful, enduring environments. This was my first INTBAU summer school and my initial exposure to authentic traditional architecture, but it certainly won’t be my last. I’m eager to see what INTBAU will offer next year!"

INTBAU Brazil Chapter

INTBAU is delighted to announce the addition of a new chapter to the international network: Brazil, hosted by the Brazilian Institute of Traditional Architecture (IBAT).

Founded in 2023, IBAT is a Brazilian association of individuals and institutions dedicated to the development of a humanized architecture, grounded in values and principles that respect traditions and local characteristics.

"This strategic collaboration aims to promote essential values, aspiring to an architecture that is not only aesthetically appealing but also grounded in humanistic and sustainable principles," remarked Bruno Perenha, president and founder of IBAT.

With this partnership, IBAT reaffirms its commitment to Brazil, intending to launch a series of initiatives such as summer schools, lectures, courses, and workshops focused on traditional architecture. The objective is to foster a platform for professionals and enthusiasts interested in the subject.

From a global perspective, the establishment of the Brazil Chapter marks the network's first formal representation on the South American continent. This region is renowned for its rich building traditions, which have encountered various phenomena in modern times that undermine their relevance in the present and future.

Echoing Bruno's words, we are truly enthusiastic about this alliance and confident that it will produce significant outcomes, both presently and in the future, for the advancement and promotion of traditional building, architecture and urbanism in Brazil.

INTBAU is pleased to collaborate once again with the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art and the The King's Foundation on the production of a new edition of ‘The Architecture of Place’ lecture series featuring high-level architects from different backgrounds and viewpoints, speaking about the influences, experiences, and projects that have led to their design perspective on the architecture of place. In the third instalment of the spring series, Mamdouh Sakr will interview Joachim Tantau about his work, background, and design perspective.

INTBAU Young Practitioner Joachim Tantau is an artist based in Hamburg, Germany. What started as a hobby at his father’s workbench eventually became a vocation, leading him to opening his own studio in 2013 after receiving a master’s degree from The King’s School of Traditional Arts, London.

His artistic repertoire spans a diverse range, encompassing architecture, furniture, interiors, sculptures, and objects d'art. In his work, he merges contemporary design aesthetics with the timeless beauty of Sacred Geometry. The design for every unique piece he creates is hand drawn with compass and ruler and carefully executed in his studio using time-honoured techniques of fine cabinetmaking.

Joachim has also been selected by The King's Foundation School of Traditional Arts, London to teach his techniques and principles to aspiring artists and designers all over the world.

CONFERENCE: The Presence of Past Disasters.

20-21 May, 2024
Downing College, Cambridge

Further information and registration: https://www.intbau.org/conference-on-post-disaster-reconstruction-the-presence-of-past-disasters/

Join the conference to explore with INTBAU and the CSCA the complexities of post-disaster reconstruction by examining the historical precedent for recovering, rehabilitating, and rebuilding after catastrophic events, as we set the stage for further discussion on the integration of local building traditions in reconstruction processes.

This two-day conference will explore, in detail, how cultures have reacted to destruction in the aftermath of terrible circumstances. Speakers will investigate how natural and human-caused disasters have shaped and continue to shape how we respond to critical changes in our built environment and, ultimately, will seek to locate new parallels between types of disasters through a series of chronologically and geographically diverse case studies.

Sessions are organised according to the four classical elements – fire, water, earth, and air –– with the additional critical human element: conflict.

This conference is convened by a partnership of INTBAU and the CSCA, with the generous support of the Ax:son Johnson Foundation. Imagery provided by the CSCA.
