Demetra George, scholar, translator, and practitioner, brings the practice of contemporary astrology back to its ancient roots. Early in her career with the publication of Asteroid Goddesses (1986), she looked to cross-cultural mythologies to draw out the archetypal meanings and psychological expression of newly available planetary bodies. She then turned to Greek and Latin texts, articulating the history, cosmology, and techniques of traditional astrology. Author of seven books, her most recent is Ancient Astrology in Theory and Practice: A Manual of Traditional Techniques, Vols. 1 &2 (Rubedo Press, 2019,2022).

19:15: The Lord of the Orb: Anthony Louis

The idea of planetary hours dates back at least to the Babylonians, who assigned rulership of each hour of day and night to one of the classical seven visible planets in Chaldean order from the slowest to the fastest. The position of the Sun in the sky indicated the hour, and the planetary ruler of that hour was considered the lord of the entire celestial sphere (aka orb), influencing the entire universe for the duration of that hour. Horary astrologers looked for some resonance between the lord of the orb and the Ascendant of a horary chart to assess whether the chart was radical. Medieval astrologers, such as Abu Ma’shar, used a profected version of the lord of the orb together with the lord of the year (the ruler of the profected natal Ascendant) to delineate solar returns. Despite discussions of lord of the orb in medieval and Renaissance texts by Bonatti, Abenragel, Giuntini, Galluci, Diego de Torres and others, somehow the use of the lord of the orb did not make its way into the English-speaking world. This presentation attempts to fill in those gaps.

We will look at some charts and see how by just using a few planets, you can quickly identify the driver behind the person, and if there is time, we will see how you can extend this process to look at Mundane charts including using Profections to arrive at the month when events may manifest.

Biography: Sharon Knight has worked as a professional astrologer for nearly 30 years. Initially studying with the Faculty, passing the Intermediate Diploma before qualifying as a QHP with Olivia Barclay. She gained her MA in Cultural Astronomy and Astrology in 2004. She’s a Fellow of the Association of Professional Astrologers International and Chair of the same. Sharon is currently a tutor & convenor of the QHP, as well as teaching her own course on traditional natal astrology. Sharon won the Astrologer of the Year title in 2016 with her lecture on Sect & Triplicity. She has spoken at the AA Conferences, The Lodge, taught traditional methods at schools in Taiwan, Turkey and to groups in South Africa & around the UK. This lecture will look at how twentieth century astrologers worked out the intimate connections between soul, psyche and the stars. Nick will explore what makes modern psychological astrology different to the astrology of previous eras, and how they are connected. What was it that twentieth-century psychological astrologers did that was different to previous schemes of chart reading – and what did they do that was the same. And how does the unconscious come into it? This is all important if we are to understand how astrology got to where it is now and vital for all students of astrology.

Biography: Nicholas Campion is Associate Professor in Cosmology and Culture at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, the only academic centre in the world to consider humanity’s relationship with the sky. He is Programme Director of the University’s distance learning MAs in Cultural Astronomy and Astrology, and Ecology and Spirituality. His books include the two-volume History of Western Astrology (London: Bloomsbury 2008/9) and Astrology and Cosmology in the World’s Religions (New York: New York University Press, 2012). He is the editor of Culture and Cosmos, the journal on the history of cultural astronomy and astrology. He was President of the Astrological Lodge from 1985-8.

We meet the evening after on a Full Moon morning, just over four days after the Equinox, in midst of a Pisces/Aries stellium, needing to be aware of Pluto’s return to Capricorn in the Autumn. As the world continues to grapple with last ditch attempts to understand and resolve twenty-first century problems with the bodged-up tools of eighteen-century economics and political strategy, is AI a dangerous interloper getting in the way, or does/will it contain answers to our problems? Roy will track and interpret key astro-cycles to seek and explain answers. Is a world organised and motivated by things and the economics of possession past its sell-by date? What are the disadvantages and advantages of a society based on the infinite variety of ideas? What would it look like? What would/should replace materialism, to be the new society’s essential binding element?”

Biography: Roy Gillett, President of The Astrological Association, full-time astrologer since 1976, software adviser, international conference speaker and Tibetan Buddhist student . Since 1978, Roy has published mundane forecasts, with a compassionate emphasis. All is covered with the fixed star Rana (Eridanus constellation- underground river) which is speaking about Zeus who sends his thunderstorms on Phaethon who almost burnt the world driving his golden car too fast. It would be interesting to see what kind of climate change agenda is going to be promoted. Maybe we may stop flying via planes for a while? In November 2024 the US is going to choose its President, with its secondary progressed Moon at 27 Pisces (Venus exaltation degree).When Jupiter and Saturn made the great conjunction in December 2020, the Moon’s placement was at 27 Pisces. In myth, Venus was made from Uranus’ blood, so she is the daughter of revolution, she is the one who protests, she is blood.

We all know that astrology relates to body parts, but how exactly does it relate to the practice of Yoga? They dovetail together in curious ways but with some clear differences. Yogis and yoginis do asana sequences like Salutation to the Sun and to the Moon and it can be said that Astrologers do their Saluation to the Stars. When both practices are fused together as in astrological magic, astrology becomes a much more ‘embodied’ practice. Astrology is increasingly taught together with yoga in the form of ‘Astroyoga’ or ‘Yogastrology’. This talk will include which asanas align to which zodiac signs and chakras, and a brief study of the natal charts of various Indian yoga gurus who brought Yoga to the West.

Biography: Kieron has had a lifelong interest in astrology having taught himself to do charts manually for friends at age 19. With a background of teaching in HE, his approach is wide-ranging and highly eclectic. He specialises in Western Psychological, Astrolocational astrology and the astrobiographies of artists through audio-visual essays. He has researched the placement of Muse asteroids among artists, writers and musicians. He takes a professional and confidential approach to clients and makes readings as objective and encouraging as possible. He also has practiced yoga since 2001. This talk will look at the friendship between these two iconic figures, the Inventor Nikola Tesla & the writer Mark Twain. Together as members of ‘The Players Club’ they were well known on the social circuit as great entertainers. Both had an interest and an influence on the others work until the friendship went awry.
