A reminder that on Fri 8 Nov 24, commencing at 1045, Lurgan and Brownlow RBL (in conjunction with ABC Borough Council) will be unveiling a memorial to the Lurgan-born Field Marshal Sir John Dill GCB CMG DSO (1881 – 1944) in the grounds of Lurgan War Memorial. And this is an event to which you are all invited.

Field Marshal Dill was a man of whom perhaps the greatest of all US Presidents, Franklin Delano Roosevelt said: ‘He was the most important figure in the remarkable accord which has been developed in the combined operations of our two countries’. Dill was a towering figure who helped forge what is now known as the ‘Special Relationship’ between the UK and the US, and this was acknowledged by Sir John’s close friend and colleague, the then Chief of Staff of the US Army, General George C Marshall, who after Sir John’s untimely death on 4 Nov 44, said of him: ‘I know of no man who has made a greater contribution to that most vital requirement to an Allied victory, the complete military cooperation between British and American forces. His death signals a loss of no less magnitude for the United States than for his own country, for the direction of his matchless efforts towards combined victory gave him strength to lay aside all other considerations’.

Not bad tributes to the Market Street-born son of a Lurgan Bank Manager.

The visitors were extremely impressed with the set-up in Lurgan Tesco this year, and congratulated Mrs Maginnis and her team of volunteers on their hard work in Tesco, in the Pop-Up Poppy Shop in Lurgan and Brownlow RBL (Opening Hours: 1500 – 1800 on Fri and Sat - 1st and 2nd, and 8th and 9th Nov 24), and also the Door-to-Door, and ‘On Street’ collectors.

A portrait of our Monarch, and the RBL patron, King Charles III has been placed on the stairwell wall in our premises in Union Street! Thanks to Ian Uprichard for sourcing the portrait, and arranging for the framing. This portrait replaces that of our late, and greatly missed, Sovereign Lady, Queen Elizabeth II, which had adorned the Clubroom since our opening in Union Street in May 1983.

'Long to reign over us. God Save The King!'

Great news for our Armed Forces community! The government has announced that the HM Armed Forces Veteran Card will now be accepted as valid photo ID at polling stations for future UK elections.

Although these cards weren’t accepted for the 2024 General Election, this change will make it easier for veterans to vote, starting with the local elections in May 2025.

Do you have a Veteran Card? Will you be using it as voter ID in the future? Let us know! 👇
