What a lovely evening we had last night!
A great line up and a tremendous audience makes for a top night of comedy.

Your fantastic lineup looked like this
MC Jake Pickford began proceedings.

Our first section was wonderfully weaved together by Saban Kazam and Madam Chandelier.
Our second section was hilariously handed to you by Jacob Hatton and Sasha Ellen

And the headline spot was delightfully dictated by the killer joke writer that is Masai Graham.

All in all, a phenomenal night.

Our Story

The Home Page of open-mic comedy nights, hosted at the newly refurbished Hat Factory by Luton Culture.
For only £5 per ticket (performers free), you can witness fresh comedy from future big names. See them before they become TV Panel show comics, and grin out at you from the DVD aisle in HMV whilst holding a mic and looking faintly embarrassed.

The blurb below is for comedians, but if you're an audience member, it may give you a little insight into what comedy is and what performers are about….

This is the only way to get a slot on the night. Only when you have had confirmation of a booking are you on the bill.

Our mentality is:

We want the acts to have a great time and relax – that creates a better night for the audience.

Note: The gig is unpaid, no expenses etc. The reason is simple: the room is a good size with an established regular core audience but we employ a number of staff on the night (techies, bar, support etc) and Luton Culture is a charity. What money we make goes back into supporting cultural opportunities for the people of Luton (libraries, arts, theatre, museums etc).

Use the stage, up-for-it crowd and professional set-up as something different from the pub circuit – not as intense as a paid gig at a similar sized venue.

We are trying to create that ideal venue for the open mic comic in Luton. The step up from pubs to clubs, without the gongs or baying crowds, without the forced competition with no overt "If you do good here, I just might give you a paying gig!" stress. None of that. Get up, enjoy yourself in front of a crowd who have paid to see you (it is a small amount, but we hope it will w**d out people who walk in from the street to drink, and do not value the comedy; thus making it feel more like a comedy club and not a pub).

Nobody cares if you die on stage! We're not going to blacklist anybody or tell an act that they don't suit our audience because, as you know, comedy comes in oh-so many forms... And we want to see comics develop their material with us and not be afraid of our stage. (There are limits, i.e. if your act involves smearing faeces around yourself, or repeating the same swear word over and over in a hypnotic mantra...You may be escorted out by officers of the law, even though we personally would find it fascinating to watch you crumble, and observe the audience’s uneasy and vaguely frightened reactions).

The benefit we can see to this is, if acts are not scared to try things, or worried about the outcome...They'll probably relax and put on a better show.

Most performers we know always do better in rooms where the venue staff and promoter are chilled out.

Naturally if a comedian said to me "I need the pressure!" I'd work with that and would tell them that if their act was crap, I'd point out their car to the audience and highlight on a map where the nearest dog turd bins are. Is that enough motivation for you? ;)
