It was my birthday on Sunday! A big'un, but I won't tell you which because then I won't have the joy of family friend's thinking I turned 18 😆

ANYWHO, this post is just to let you all know that I'm a bit behind on enquiries and emails - (personal AND work!!). I'm having a few days 'off', but I'll be back on top of everything by next week! :D

When I do my stalls, I often end up having the most wholesome chats with kids who love art - it’s truly one of my favourite things about markets!

There is often such fear and anxiety around drawing and creating. Even as we go into adulthood. How many of you ‘used to draw but haven’t in a very long time’? Or ‘used to love to paint but was never very good at it’?

One Treacle Market, a little kid said ‘there are no mistakes in art’ and I echoed his words! Because there really ISN’T! I grew up thinking ‘good art’ is what looks accurate to a photograph. But now, in the age of AI, where something can look real in an uncanny way, abstract and unique is craved more than ever. I love drawing hyper-realistic portraits, I love the challenge of getting it to look as close to a photograph as possible… It’s fun for me! But it should NOT be limiting! To me or anyone else!

Art is NOT about being talented, or any of that. I never went to ‘art school’, and I sure as hell never really learnt any proper techniques when it comes to painting and drawing.

Art is about experimenting - playing with new materials, seeing how they interact with each other, making mistakes, and starting over. It’s about expression and emotion. It is a way for us to communicate in a world without words.
I get so lost in the details sometimes that I have to force myself to just ‘play’ with my materials. Don’t get me wrong, half the time I am disappointed in what I create. But I am learning, growing, and sometimes, just because I don’t like it, doesn’t mean other people won’t.

And I think we all need to do a bit more ‘playing’ with art.

Beautiful Molly. She won a giveaway of mine way back in 2016 - me and Aaron were SO happy to see her name pop up in the draw! In fact, I think we upgraded the size of the sketch because I was just so excited to draw that adorable face!!! 😍 Since then, her mum has been incredibly supportive of my business, regularly ordering from me to gift her friends and family, and for herself, even sending us Christmas cards 🥹 - bare in mind this lovely lady lives in Canada! Anyway. Katherine wrote on 's instagram to say that, on Friday, this gorgeous pupper Molly crossed the rainbow bridge 🌈😞 Molly had put up such a good fight, adapting to even the loss of an eye! Sweet angel was 15 years old. How can I love a dog I've never met, so dearly?

I’ve been teaching / tutoring Lily since she was just 7. She is now 15, and doing her art GCSE… and one of the two artist’s she has chosen to take influence from for her final piece… is ME… aaaaaahhhhhhhh so many emotions!

I remember sitting in school and writing about other artists. Analysing their styles and printing out their pictures, copying and reimagining their art. And now LOOK!!!! Like WHAT! It’s crazy. It’s so special to me.❤

And anyway I don’t want to get too soppy because Lily will see this, and, y’know, she’s a teenager now soooooo, I don’t wanna lose my street cred 🤣

I took an unintentional break from social media because mental health - but the sun came out this week so now I'm cured! (That's a joke, I'm not cured, but I feel a lot better.. but I've also been taking my vitamins and drinking more water and eating less sugar..... so maybe that helped lol... BUT I DIGRESS!!!)

I thought maybe you would like to see some of my scribbles from the last few weeks.

I've been trying to capture the world around me in pencil, rather than with a camera. Little challenges like:

'can I draw Dinky in the 20 seconds it takes him to run to me from the other end of the field?'
or
'can I draw the stage of this theatre before the show begins?'.

One day I just stood on the footpath by Macc bus station and scribbled the hills and church.

One of my favourite things about sketching family portraits is spotting those facial similarities between folk. 😊 It's not always immediately apparent, but after many many hours staring at faces, I start to see (and admire) how genetics shape us 🥹 It fascinates me!

I can combine multiple photos, to create a beautiful family portrait of your loved ones past and present.

Shout out to us ALL for making it through January!! I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t a struggle for me… I’ve been distracted, unproductive, and riddled with low self-esteem. I’ve been embarrassed by everything I share, and ashamed of myself when I can’t share things. I’ve been confused about my journey, my direction, my purpose. Do I share too much about myself online? Too little? Should I be only posting pet artwork? Why haven’t I found my art style yet? Why can’t I pick a lane?!!?!

SO, yeah, I’m a bit all over the place at the moment… and I’ve been a bit slower than usual at replying to messages… I’m just a bit lost in general. But finding my way again!

I have so much gratitude, for every little bit of support you all give, every single one of you who like and comment and share and order from me… I couldn’t do this without you all! It’s hard to express gratitude when my brain is trying to convince me that you’re all humouring me and I’m actually rubbish at everything and everyone is just being polite and kind…
But, on the off chance that you’re all being truthful… THANK YOU FOR BEING ON THIS JOURNEY WITH ME!

A lovely lady got in touch with me just before Christmas, saying she was over in the UK from Saudi Arabia until New Year, and asked whether I could create two portraits for her to take back for her friend. There was a week to go until Christmas, and I was still working on other orders... but I said yes anyway because YES PLEASE TAKE MY ART EVERYWHERE IN THE WORLD!!!!! No but seriously though, I told her I was pushed for time to create a full portrait, but that I was planning to explore my style in the new year. If she was happy to let me just play around with materials to create the portraits, then I could absolutely have them done over Christmas for her, and at a reduced cost. She said OK! And so I had a play. And this is the beautiful Suzie 🥹 I really let loose with this piece - the idea was to portray the character of the dog from the photos on my phone, using anything I feel like using. And then I just let myself... create...
