Had enough of hearing how Mindset is everything?

Yeah, me too.

But, what exactly is Mindset, and why should we take it seriously?

In her book, world-renowned Stanford University psychologist, Carol Dweck, explains the difference our Mindset can make to long term success.

Here's how she defines it:

Fixed Mindset - "In a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them. They also believe that talent alone creates success—without effort."

Growth Mindset - "In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment."

Breaking these definitions down further:

Fixed Mindset - I can't see why my Facebook posts aren't getting any engagement. I know what I'm talking about, I've been in this industry for ten years!

Growth Mindset: My Facebook posts aren't getting engagement even though I'm knowledgable, so I've enrolled in a creative writing course to improve my delivery.

Fixed Mindset: I don't know why I bother, I'll never be as good as them.

Growth Mindset: I don't need to be like them, I just need help to find my own voice and with practice, I will!

Fixed Mindset: I don't know why I started this business, I really don't have the skills. I'm overwhelmed.

Growth Mindset: When I started this business, I had no idea what I was doing, but I'm learning as I go and with a little help, my skills are improving, even though I feel a little overwhelmed sometimes.

Both types of Mindset are necessary.
As Dweck says, no amount of practice, e.g. jumping off chairs etc., will equip you to fly, so a fixed Mindset of 'I cannot fly' is ok!

Developing a Growth Mindset is essential in this competitive world. And all it takes is for you to believe your abilities can be expanded and improved.
