Carmen, The Opera, As It’s Never Been Seen Before
Underwater Spectacular Now Showing On Printworks s’ Digital Ceiling
A brand new, stunning show launches Thursday 6 June at Printworks.
An underwater, short version of the opera, Carmen, is now showing on the largest digital ceiling in Europe and it’s completely free of charge to see.
Headlining a wider underwater theme that will run throughout June, the timeless story of love, lust, betrayal and death was shot in a special water tank with highly trained actors who are used to performing underwater. The 200 year old opera has been given a modern twist with a reworking of the classic Habanera track which is highly recognisable. Recorded by London-based artist Claudillea, it fuses the timeless operatic beauty of the original song with modern, glitchy dubstep bass and rhythms, creating the perfect dramatic and high-impact accompaniment to the film, suited to Printworks’ contemporary style.
Shot underwater over two days, the final piece of film is stunning to watch. The actors are wearing flamboyant costumes and a combination of props including silk sheets, playing cards and roses were also captured on camera underwater to fully tell the tale of the opera in just four minutes.

Encouraging workers and visitors to discover stunning outdoor spaces this summer, Manchester has launched the Manchester Green Spaces Trail: a brand-new walking trail celebrating the best green, blue and outdoor areas across the city centre.
