This is your sign to plant Anemone Japonica 🌸

Japanese Anemones are one of our (and Hannah's) all-time favourite perennials! There's a gorgeous variety of colours to choose from, they're easy to grow, and great for pollinators. Here's some key points:

🌤️ Plant in full sun or partial shade
Anemones love a sunny spot, so make sure to plant them somewhere that will get full sun, but partial dappled shade is also okay.

🚿 Water, water, water
Anemones love a lot of water, so make sure to keep on top of the watering so they don't dry out.

🗓️ Months of colour!
Anemones can flower all the way from June through to the first frosts in November - giving you months of interest.

Our September to-do list ✅

September is one of our favourite months in the garden, and an easy one in terms of tasks to do! There's perennials to divide, seeds to collect and bulbs to plant, but at least we still have later evenings to get all the jobs done.

What's first on your to-do list? 🤔

Save money on ingredients with your own edible garden! 🌱

Edible gardens are a great way to grow just a little bit of your own produce at home, but that little bit really can go a long way. Mint, Thyme, Oregano - pick your favourite herb and start growing.

1️⃣ Fill a window box (or other container) with multi-purpose peat free compost
Top tip: mix potting grit through your compost to improve drainage!

2️⃣ Pick your herbs
Hannah opts for an Oregano, Curry Plant, Thyme and Pineapple Mint, but you can grow whatever you prefer.

3️⃣ Tease the roots
Remove the herbs from the pots and tease the roots to help them grow nicely into the container.

4️⃣ Plant your herbs
Plant your herbs in the container, and repeat the steps until all herbs are planted.

5️⃣ Finishing touches
Top the herbs off with extra soil and water well before moving out into the garden. Read up on what conditions your herbs prefer, and try to plant your new edible garden somewhere with great conditions for them, usually somewhere with lots of full sun or partial shade.

You need to know these signs for harvesting apples! 🍎

It's harvest season - apples can be harvested from August through October, so now's the time to check for these key signs your apples are ready:

→ Colourful?
Whether you've grown red or green apples, if they've developed their deep colours, it could be time to harvest.

→ The twist test
Twist your apples *gently*. If they twist off easily, they're ready. If they're still firmly attached, give them some time.

→ Have they started dropping?
If your apples have already started to drop off the tree, they're likely ready to harvest.

🔔 Remember, it could take 2 or 3 picking for a full harvest! Not all apples harvest at the same time, give them time for delicious fruits.

Do you grow apples? What's your favourite recipe with them?

Parker's Picks: Salvias 💚

Salvias have shot to popularity in the last couple of years, and it's clear to see why! You won't find a recent show garden that doesn't feature these beautiful perennials, whether it's the lovely fragrant Nemorosa species, or the pollinator-friendly Salvia greggii. There's so many benefits to growing Salvias:

❄️ One of the hardiest perennials around
Salvias are super hardy - tolerant to drought, and on the other hand, also tolerant to cold, even withstanding frosts down to -22!

🐝 A pollinator favourite
Salvias are nectar rich flowers ideal for pollinators. Bees love them, butterflies love them, we love them! If you want to attract pollinators to the garden, Salvias are a must-have.

⏳ They flower for a *long* time
Did you know some Salvia varieties flower for up to 6 months?! They add height, colour, texture and depth to any display, even as your garden transitions beautifully from Summer to Autumn.

That's just our top 3 favourite elements of Salvias, but there's lots more to mention! Take a look online and grow Salvias for next year, you'll see just why we love them.

How to pick out the *best* plants in the garden centre! 🍃

Stopping by the garden centre this week? Here's our checklist to guarantee you pick the best plants.

1️⃣ Check the leaves
Check the colour - you want glossy, green leaves. Leave any plants with brown or wilting leaves.

2️⃣ Check the soil
You need to find an in between - not too dry, not too wet. Waterlogged plants could lead to rotting roots, so leave any you're unsure of.

3️⃣ Check the roots
Take the plants from their pots and make sure they have white or tan roots. If they're mushy or smelly, put them back where you found them.

4️⃣ Do your research
Plan ahead so you know which plants will be a good fit for your garden. Or better yet, ask for advice from the staff!

Get ready for Autumn planting season 🧑‍🌾

It's almost peak Autumn planting season, make sure you get ahead with these prep tips:

1️⃣ Choose the right plants
Opt for hardy vegetables and flowers that can withstand cooler temperatures. For winter colour, consider planting pansies and violas.

2️⃣ Mulch wisely
Applying a layer of mulch around your plants can help protect the soil from frost, retain moisture, and suppress w**ds. Use organic mulch like straw, leaf mold, or wood chips to keep your garden healthy.

3️⃣ Water properly
Although Autumn tends to be wetter, it's still important to keep an eye on your garden's moisture levels. But be careful, you don't want to water log your plants!

4️⃣ Protect young plants
Use cloches, row covers, or cold frames to shield young plants from early frosts and harsh winds.

5️⃣ Plant bulbs for Spring
Autumn is the ideal time to plant spring-flowering bulbs like daffodils, tulips, and crocuses. Plant them at the recommended depth and spacing to ensure a vibrant display come springtime.

6️⃣ Prune & tidy up
Take the opportunity to prune any dead or diseased branches from your trees and shrubs.

7️⃣ Plan ahead
Use this time to plan your garden for the next year. Consider crop rotation, companion planting, and any new plants or features you want to introduce. A well-thought-out plan can lead to a more productive and enjoyable garden.

8️⃣ Stay informed
Keep an eye on the weather forecast and be prepared to take action if an early frost or storm is predicted. Being proactive can save your plants and ensure a more successful growing season.

A quick guide to growing Daffodils 🌼

Daffodils are an all-time favourite for Spring gardens! Whether you prefer a classic trumpet or a flurry of fluffy double blooms, they're one of the easiest bulbs to plant in the garden.

⏰ When to plant Daffodils?

Daffodils should be planted in early Autumn, and we'd always recommend planting in early September. Daffodil bulbs like to be planted in soil while it's still warmer, to establish their roots before the frosts.

But the frost is important! Cold snaps kick start a Daffodil's flower development, so make sure your bulbs are in the ground before then.

🌼 How to plant Daffodils

They're famously very easy! Dig a small hole about 2-3 times the height of the bulb, no deeper than 20cm, and pop your bulbs in root-side down! And don't forget, mix a handful of potting grit through your soil to improve drainage where needed.

🧑‍🌾 Scattering Daffodils

A really popular planting style is scattering! Scattering bulbs helps achieve a more organic, natural look to a display, similar to how you'd find the flowers in nature.

Simple grab a handful of bulbs and scatter them over the area you wish to plant them. Don't over think it, gently throw them down and plant them wherever they land. Sometimes you see this trend be referred to as chaos gardening, and you can see why!

Mix in some complementary bulbs and plants for a beautiful natural garden.

🌱 TOP TIP for after care

Want to stop your bulbs being dug up? Or maybe stopping pests from eating the first shoots next year? Cover the area you've planted your Daffodils in a thin layer of potting grit. The early shoots will still be able to grow through, but it stops any unwanted guests from feeding on the stems before they've had chance to grow.

Time to plant Japanese Anemones 🌸

Anemones are one of our favourite Summer-flowering perennials, blooming from June all the way through to as late as November! They’re easy to grow, fairly low maintenance and are just stunning - here’s what you need to know...

What your Anemone Japonica like:

🌱 Moist but well-draining soil
⛅️ Full sun or light, dappled shade

How to plant Anemones:

1️⃣ Prepare your soil and remove any w**ds
2️⃣ Dig a hole just deep enough to plant the roots/clump
3️⃣ Remove your plant from its pot and set into the hole, leaving the base or stem of the plant above ground
4️⃣ Firm the soil and water well after planting

Our trend predictions for your garden! 🙌

We've seen a lot of planting styles at this year's flower shows, so we've compiled our top 3 favourite trend predictions for you to try at home:

1️⃣ Forest gardens for the natural look
Forest gardens incorporate a layered approach to planting. You'll want to plant a variety of ground cover perennials and low-growing bulbs, mixed with taller flowering plants and trees to create a display inspired by nature. They're great for wildlife, but also for your mental health - letting you get out into nature from your own back door.

2️⃣ Irises!
When we think of Spring-flowering bulbs, your mind most likely jumps to Tulips, Daffodils or Crocus, but give Irises a shot! Irises are a gorgeous flower, with such a variety to choose from. They're frost and rain hardy, stunning structural flowers, and super easy to care for - what more could you want?

3️⃣ Colour blocking
Colour blocking (or drenching) is the art of focusing areas of your garden with a primary colour palette. Use a range of plants all following a theme, such as all purple or all red, to create pockets of vibrant colour and segment your garden. It'll brighten up your garden with a swathe of colourful pockets, looking great in Spring and Summer.

So, who else is planting a colour-blocked forest garden filled with Irises for Spring? 🙋‍♀️

➡️ Alliums: September-October

How to choose the right size pot 🪴

Choosing the right size pots for your plants might seem difficult, but it's actually very simple with Hannah's handy advice...

📏 Choose a pot 2-3 inches bigger in diameter than the pot it comes in
This should leave more than enough space for growth over a year or 2.

📏 Make sure the hight of the pot matches the mature height of the plant
Having a pot to match the height of your plants not only looks better, it helps keep your plant more stable in strong winds which could otherwise knock a small pot over!

Get the look: Inner City 💜

2️⃣ Eryngium planum
If you love a bit of drama, Sea Holly is the plant to have! This magnificent plant grows up to 1m tall, producing thistle-like foliage for a truly unique character. Mel used it for its height and leggy stems, adding dimension to the towers running through the border.
🦋 Loved by butterflies!

3️⃣ Knautia arvensis (Field Scabious)
This gorgeous flower will be at home in any wildflower display! The lilac purple shade lights up in the sun, creating a pinky glow like no other. With a mature height of 1.5m, it's the perfect plant to add height to your planting. And of course, it's a bee magnet.

Your guide to watering in summer! 💦

We've had a hot few days and it feels like Summer might finally be here (well, at least for a few days), so we thought we'd share Hannah's top tips to watering your garden in a hot spell.

🗓️ Water early in the morning or late at night
Watering in the cooler parts of the day will make sure your plants can drink up more water before it evaporates. If you've had a wetter summer, we'd recommend watering in the morning, as slugs and snails will be more active in the night time.

💧 Water straight into the soil
Make sure you're watering directly into the soil or compost, and avoiding leaves as much as you can. This will make sure the roots get all the water they need, and there's no water left behind.

🔥 Don't worry about leaf scorch!
It's an urban myth that leaving water to dry on leaves could cause leaf scorch, but studies find otherwise. Don't worry about leaf scorch, even if it occurs, your plants won't be any worse off for it.

31/07/2024

Bee baths are an essential for your summer garden, giving bees a safe space to relax, rehydrate and rest out of the sun. You'll need: ➡️ a dish or terracotta bowl ➡️ stones or pebbles ➡️ water. How to make a bee bath: 1️⃣ Get a shallow bowl/dish 2️⃣ Fill the bottom with a handful of stones of pebbles 3️⃣ Fill with water so that the tops of the stones are just above the water 4️⃣ Check and top up water daily, and clean out once per week or whenever needed.

Planting inspo: Hydrangea + Chocolate Cosmos 🤎

A fan favourite at RHS Tatton Flower Show, Hannah planted a beautiful pairing of Hydrangea and Chocolate Cosmos, which yes, do smell like chocolate!

The deep, warm red tones of the Cosmos perfectly contrast the bushy Hydrangea to add a statement to the border.

What do you think of this pairing? 👀

How to water your houseplants 🪴

Now it's getting warm, it's even more important that you're keeping a close eye on your houseplants. As a rule of thumb, houseplants should be watered every 1-2 weeks through Summer.

👇 Check the soil
Poke your finger into the soil and if your finger comes out clean, your plant can be watered. If there's soil on your finger, the soil is still moist and doesn't need to be watered.

🛀 Dunking your plants
For larger plants, 'dunking' is a really effective way of watering. Fill up a sink and dunk the plant into the water, and hold it until the bubbles stop coming up to the surface. Let the plant drain, and then place it back in its pot.

💧 Bottom watering
Fill up the sink with a shallow level of water. Place plants like Cacti or Succulents in the water for around an hour, and then bring out to drain. Place them back in the pot, and your plants will be happy.

Do you have any other houseplant tips? Let us know in the comments!
