So my two cents on th...

IT'S ALL IN THE NAME!

Back in 2020 I wrote an article called "What's in a name?" (link in comments)

It's as relevant now as it was then, probably more so now we live in a world of remote or flexi working.

We create bespoke systems that replace the need for 3rd party software - it does all the things any business owner wants - improves efficiency, reduces costs, makes life easier BUT that doesn't mean that introducing something new and improved is always perceived that way because let's be honest people bloody hate change!

So how do we get around this?

Naming something implies some sort of autonomy or ownership. We name children, we name our cars, we put names to things because it creates a bond.

So why not name your systems?

We put that ownership into the hands of the people who will use it, and it creates an immediate personal bond. You no longer talk about "the system", but instead find yourself talking about Dave, Hugo, The Oracle, The Abyss, Jordan or whatever your name is (these are actual names our clients have given their systems). And each of these names has a story. Dave is named after the late father of the founders of that particular business, with a unanimous decision to raise new Dave in his memory.

Hugo came about because the system was originally called BOS and every time the name came up, the staff thought about, well, Hugo. So the name was changed, and stuck. The Abyss is a service desk platform for an IT support company, and it's where all your tickets go. I spoke with someone who's internal system is called Megatron or MT1 - they hate working on it but the name gives them an alliance with it that creates a bond only reserved for that annoying family member you have to engage with everynow and then 😆

I also know that everyone has internal names for their own systems - typically landing on the more amusing side so over to you - tell me what nicknames you have for your systems....fyi the worse the better 🤣

📣 R+D on a team of 10 can offset more or less all costs of development. 65% of our costs go into the claim, plus 86% of staff salaries for time spent on the project (typically 5-15%). Assume a CT bill of £100,000 and a project spend in the year of £60,000. 65% = £39,000. Assume 10 staff at approx 35k each, all involved in the project. 10 * 35 * .86 * 10% = £30,100. Total on the claim = £69,100. CT bill is now £30,900. 📣
