Cheswardine came together last month on the 6th June to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of D Day.

The community was very kind with their donations and between St Swithun’s Church and Cheswardine Parish Hall a total of £745.66 was raised.

This has been distributed by the Parish Council between the five D Day Charities which are Normandy Memorial Trust, Royal Airforce Benevolent Fund, ABF The Soldiers Charity, The Royal Naval Association and The Merchant Navy Association.
Many thanks to all those who kindly donated and many thanks to all those involved in organising the days events and ensuring their success.

Shropshire Council are asking for views on a proposed subscription fee for the collection of garden waste.
For more details on the consultation please see http://www.shropshire.gov.uk/gardenwastebudget2024

(WS)

🚛 Until 20 May we’re asking for your views on a proposed annual subscription fee of £52 for the collection of garden waste. That’s the equivalent of £1 a week. 80% of English councils already charge for collecting garden waste. Many have been doing so for several years. The average annual fee across the country is £55 a year.

🏭 We’re also asking how we can reduce the cost of running our five household recycling centres. Would you be willing to pay more than £52 a year for a garden waste collection if the additional money was used to keep all the centres open? Should the opening times be reduced? Should a permit scheme be introduced?

⚠️ Why are we asking? We must make £62m of savings in 2024/25 - mainly due to growing demand for social care – and we need to make some difficult decisions.

Did you know that Cheswardine has an active litter-picking group?

Cheswardine Litter Heroes is organised by Judith Kershaw who reports;

"There is no end to news stories raising awareness about the problem of litter pollution and the damage it causes. Residents in Cheswardine, enjoying local walks during the pandemic, noticed an increase in the amount of litter blighting the streets and green spaces and decided to take action. ‘Cheswardine Litter Heroes’ was formed, with over 25 residents now regularly undertaking litter picks, either individually or in pairs, in and around the village.
The amount of litter collected has shocked everyone involved, with around 100 bin bags full of rubbish collected in less than a month.

Residents have noticed that most litter is cans and bottles and that many seem to be thrown out of passing cars. However, the most disgusting sight reported is dog poo bags hung on trees or fences! These are not only an eyesore but also a health hazard.
Cheswardine Litter Heroes are ordinary local people who are willing to volunteer to make a real difference in their community. Their enthusiasm and passion for action is helping to improve the local environment, making Cheswardine a great litter-free place for everyone".

If you wish to get involved please email Judith on [email protected]

Information from Shropshire Council.

Shropshire Council is pleased to announce the return of the Winter Support Service for a fourth year. During the coming months, the service will assist residents who may need a little additional support (aged 18+) to maintain their independence and remain well at home and following a hospital discharge.
The Winter Support Service runs until 31 March 2024 has been reinstated to support people to avoid a health and care crisis over the winter period.

What will the service provide?
The service will connect people to a range of support including:
• Collection and delivery of medications
• Shopping and delivery
• Wellbeing “check-in and chat”
• Companionship for isolated or lonely people
• The expertise of a Mental Health Outreach Worker
• Signposting towards meal provision
• Community transport (subject to local availability, fees may apply)
• Cost of living advice and support
• Connectivity into wider support offered across the voluntary, community and public sector

It will also ensure safe and supported discharges home from hospital. This includes:
• Transport returning home from hospital
• Settling people in at home following discharge from hospital
• Simple aids and equipment following hospital discharge

Shropshire’s Winter Support Service does not offer a crisis response or personal care but will work as part of the health and care system to ensure people get the support they need through appropriate referrals and signposting to local sources of support. Shropshire’s Winter Support Service is part of the council’s commitment to
support people to remain both physically and mentally well, particularly during the winter months.

How do I find out more?
Individual residents, their families and those who support people across Shropshire’s communities can call the Winter Support Service helpline on 0345 678 9012 to find out more and be referred where appropriate. The phoneline will be open Mondays-Fridays, 9am to 5pm.
