Over the past 10+ years, having creativity and sustainability at the heart of my business, I have upcycled hundreds of furniture pieces which have found their new homes all over the UK. I’m passionate about furniture painting, interior desig

n, all things vintage, colour, as well as incorporating various art mediums in my designs, such as papers, stencils, decoupage, gilding waxes, gold leafs etc. I love transforming old, dated furniture into desirable and elegant pieces and giving them a new lease of life. Re-love and re-use is my motto, and my aim is to make people appreciate the value of good-quality, well-made old furniture instead of throwing them away and filling up the landfills! Creativity and crafting were always a big part in my life ever since I was a little girl. Apart from spending a serious chunk of my childhood at my parents' architectural practice helping around with various jobs (and without realising it, gaining priceless work experience in design!), I also remember myself always sketching scenes from everyday life in this small sketchpad using charcoal or coloured pencils, making handmade bunting out of sea shells, or hand-sewing all my dolls' clothes myself. Academically, however, I had chosen to start out my career path in quite a different way. I first studied History & Politics at university and then went on to receive an MA in International Relations. After having worked at the UN initially and then at various academic establishments in the area of communications and events, I finally felt ready to turn a new page in my life and turn my hobby and passion into a business! Though I would upcycle furniture from earlier on, I established the business in 2014 after becoming a mum and after we moved out of London, where flexibility and working around my son's life schedule became paramount. I get a buzz out of finding and working with old (or outdated), vintage pieces of furniture, breathing new life back into them and then finding them a new home. And this chest of drawers is anything but boring! Glossy black painted Mid-Century Modern chest of drawers, perfect for a David Bowie fan!

This chest features a Davie Bowie Pop Art print, thinned out and decoupaged at the front and Ziggy Stardust lightning bolts, hand-drawn on the two sides of the chest!

The inside base of each individual drawer is painted in a different bold colour, taken from the art print.

Painted in a wide range of professional paints, incl Little Greene Jack Black, Leather, Indian Yellow, Fusion Renfrew Blue & Coral, Autentico Antique Turqoise and Cosmic Teal.

My Story

MEET THE MAKER | LUCIE VASSILIOU

Hi there! I’m a Marlow based mum, upcycler, maker and furniture painter. Over the years, I have upcycled hundreds of furniture pieces in different styles. I’m passionate about furniture painting, interior decor, combining colours, working with different types of papers, stencils and decoupage. I love transforming old, dated furniture into desirable and elegant pieces and giving them a new lease of life. Upcycling and re-use is my motto! Any tired and seemingly useless and unwanted piece can be upcycled!

My story began around 2011 when I started painting my own furniture when my husband and I had just bought and moved in to our first house together back then, in Ealing, west London. My very first project was a nest of tables, which I had ‘shabby-chiced’. The furniture painting ‘bug’ immediately turned from curiosity to passion - I could not stop! I started reading books, watching online tutorials, trying out different techniques and paints, attending a few short courses. After eventually running out of space in my own house, I decided to carry on searching for vintage pieces to upcycle and revamp, and sell on to others. And so, my business - L’AtelierLucie - had slowly started making its first baby steps out of our spare bedroom, and became my new ‘me’.

I get a buzz out of finding and working with old, vintage pieces of furniture, breathing new life back into them and then finding them a new home. I would love to hear from you if you have a piece of furniture that is crying out for a new look and lease of life. I accept furniture painting commissions and offer free quote visits within 20 miles of Marlow, during which I can also consult my clients on which colours and brands to choose from a wide range of paints, such as Autentico, Little Greene, Neptune, and others. I can also source and then paint furniture for my clients, so if you’re looking for something specific, do give me a shout and I’ll do my best to find the perfect piece for you.
