Tansley Film's debut screening from National Theatre Live is the powerful PRIMA FACIE (15) performed solo by Jodie Comer at 7.30 pm on Sunday 15th September at Tansley Village Hall. Booking is open NOW by email to [email protected] for seats, £10.

"Jodie Comer’s West End stage debut is a baptism of fire by any standards. A one-woman play about a lawyer who specialises in defending men accused of sexual assault, until she is assaulted herself, it demands frenetic, non-stop physical and emotional engagement from its lead.

Comer delivers. She roars through Suzie Miller’s script. The play roars, too, sometimes too loudly in its polemic, but Comer works overtime to elevate these moments.

Directed by Justin Martin, Comer’s Tessa Ensler is a ruthlessly competitive young barrister with a sly wit. A state-educated bright spark who survives the gladiatorial contests of Cambridge law school, she is a very different woman before she finds herself on the other side of the witness stand as a victim."

Prima Facie | Official Trailer - Back in Cinemas from 12 September | National Theatre Live 22/08/2024

Following a suggestion by one of our audience members, we are considering screening at least 6 plays per year that National Theatre records live at its theatres and distributes on Blu-ray disc through its National Theatre Live brand. This would be in addition to our traditional monthly screenings of recent, top-rated films on Tuesday evenings.

We would screen on Friday or Saturday or Sunday evenings, around once per month. Tickets would be £10, possibly available online only through TicketSource, enabling you to pick your seat and to pay with a payment card.

National Theatre Live's programme comprises around 10 plays per year. For example (only), the next play to be released to cinemas is a one-woman performance from Jodie Comer called Prima Facie (15), trailered at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLu7NgSq-e0 .

As this would be a very significant extra commitment for us, please email [email protected] saying whether you would be interested to see some of National Theatre Live's screened plays in our cinema and which of Friday or Saturday or Sunday evenings would be good for you. Thank you.

The Sense of an Ending 18/08/2024

THE SENSE OF AN ENDING is a British film from 2017 that we didn't show. Chris watched it last night free with BBC iPlayer at https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000hls0/the-sense-of-an-ending and rated it 7/10. Jim Broadbent is good as always. It's an interesting, mysterious and enjoyable film. You may wish to watch it (free) too.

"Tony Webster (Broadbent), semi-retired owner of a specialist photography shop, receives a mysterious legacy and finds himself contending with a past he had never thought that much about."

It's not long now (while not wishing away the time) for our new season that we are all looking forward to bringing you.

It's probably a way off yet but a new film on our shortlist is SMALL THINGS LIKE THESE. It's a historical drama directed by Tim Mielants and adapted by Enda Walsh from the 2021 novel of the same name by Claire Keegan. It stars Cillian Murphy, Eileen Walsh, Michelle Fairley, Emily Watson, Clare Dunne and Helen Behan.

It focuses on Ireland's infamous Magdalen laundries in which women who had committed no crimes were effectively imprisoned like slaves, with collusion by the state and the laundries' customers, and forced to work for no pay, as recently as 1996. [Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magdalene_Laundries_in_Ireland].

Tim Robey's 4-star review in The Daily Telegraph says it "is a tight-lipped Irish drama even more suffused with sadness than the log-line implies, and shouldered with hypnotic grace by a very special Cillian Murphy in his first post-Oppenheimer role."

Peter Bradshaw's 4-star review in The Guardian says "I was so rapt, so caught up in this film, that I wasn’t aware that it was going to be the ending until the screen faded to black. It is an absorbing, committed drama."

One of our two options for May 2023 was AFTERSUN. We did not screen it but you can watch it FREE now on BBC iPlayer at https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episodes/m001w9pm/aftersun .

We have reduced our shortlist for 2nd May to TWO very different, well-rated films, TOP GUN: MAVERICK and AFTERSUN. If you might be in our audience that evening, please comment below (or reply by email to our invitation to vote) by Sunday 2nd April telling us the one that YOU would like to see with us.

1. TOP GUN: MAVERICK (our first film showable in 4K). (12A) UK release 27 May 2022. Rotten Tomatoes https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/top_gun_maverick rating 96% by critics and 99% by audience. Watch a trailer at https://youtu.be/g4U4BQW9OEk?t=6 .

Storyline: After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. He is called upon to train a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialised mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen. Facing an uncertain future, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his past and deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.

Scoring it 100% Robbie Collin of The Telegraph says "It’s crammed with images you didn’t know that you were desperate to see until the second you see them."

We say that this blockbuster has lots going for it with plenty of exciting aerial action (in real aircraft!) and a gripping story to bring the season to a lively end.

2. AFTERSUN. (12A) UK release 18th November 2022. Rotten Tomatoes https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/aftersun rating 96% by critics and 81% by audience. Watch a trailer at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXKcWRu8K_U .

This British film won OUTSTANDING DEBUT BY A BRITISH WRITER and DIRECTOR for Charlotte Wells in this year's BAFTA Film Awards 2023. It won 6 British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs) including Best British Independent Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay. Some of the diction is hard to follow so we may enable sub-titles much of the time.

Storyline: At a fading vacation resort, 11-year-old Sophie treasures rare time together with her loving and idealistic father, Calum. As a world of adolescence creeps into view, beyond her eye Calum struggles under the weight of life outside of fatherhood. Twenty years later, Sophie's tender recollections that we see of their last holiday together become a powerful and heartrending portrait of their relationship, as she tries to reconcile the father she knew then with the man she didn't.

Scoring it 100% Clarisse Loughrey of The Independent says "For all that Aftersun can be described as gentle, contemplative and even beautiful, it’s also the kind of film that feels as if it’s teetering on the edge of a cliff."

We say that it's an observational, documentary-like story, incorporating home movie clips, with lots of dialogue between father and daughter. It has an unstated ending. Frankio Corio (as young Sophie) and Paul Mescal (as Calum) are excellent, natural and believable.

As you know, we have upgraded our 4K disc player to one from Panasonic that copes properly with long films. We will be using it for the first time from 3rd September. As a bonus, when we need subtitles it allows us to position them much further up from the bottom of the screen so that people at the back should be able to see them.

We are looking at upgrading our 4K (and Blu-ray) disc playback capability with the Panasonic UB820EB 4K disc player - https://www.panasonic.com/uk/consumer/home-entertainment/blu-ray-and-dvd/dp-ub820eb.html . As well as playing long 4K discs properly we will be able to reposition subtitles further up the screen so that they are easy to see from everywhere in the room. This would enable us to show subtitled films that are not/mostly not in the English language (e.g. Past Lives) or have poor diction if we choose to.

When we started in 2009 our entry charge for visitors was £4. Today, 16 years later, our charge is still only £4! That's owing to the popularity of our screenings, often with 70 or more at a film, the amazing value for money that Tansley Village Hall offers its customers (like us) and relatively low increases in licence and media costs.
