Up to half a million people in the UK experience work-related stress every year along with other common stress factors include alcohol, smoking, exams, pregnancy, divorce, moving, death in family, lifestyle, drugs, poor nutrition and unemployment (Health and Safety Executive 2011). Anxiety is one of the commonest reactions to stress, such that the two are often considered together, and treated in the same way.

Recent systematic reviews of the evidence found consistently positive results in trials of acupuncture for anxiety (Amorim 2018: thirteen randomised controlled trials (RCTs); Goyata 2016).

Studies have shown that the benefits of acupuncture for neck pain may be maintained up to 12 months after treatment (Cerzo-Tellez 2016; MacPherson 2015).

In addition to being a safe and effective option to long term opioid based pharmaceuticals, scientific research supports increasing evidence advocating acupuncture for chronic back pain from injury or other sources (Yin 2017).

The World Health Organisation (WHO) lists treatment of Lower Back Pain and Sciatica, through clinical trials on Acupuncture, to be an effective treatment.

According to Cochrane reviews (2009), acupuncture for tension type headaches & migraines is effective and recommended by NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) guidelines in 2012.

Cochrane reviews (2016) found that acupuncture reduces migraine frequency and is as effective as prophylactic drugs.

Since 2005, in excess of 80 NHS publications have recommended acupuncture for tension headaches and migraines (BAcC, 2018)

According to the Migraine Trust, migraine is the third most common disease in the world, affecting about one in seven people.

Chronic migraine affects approximately 2% of the world population and three times as many women as men get migraines.
