Soberista Expatriate most amazing part of that healing, we never stop learning!
I have known this for a long time, but I had it underlined very recently
when I got an interesting revelation about my own mental health that
has caused me to think about my entire life in an entirely new way.
We've all heard the saying, "What goes up must come down," but we
alcoholics can carry that to the extreme. This is especially true of our
moods. We love it when we're way, way up (manic) and we despair
when we are way, way down (depressed). For many of us these
extreme swings in mood feel "normal." Spoiler alert - they're not.
Alcoholics self-medicate their symptoms of mental illness by drowning them in alcohol. We used it to calm ourselves, give ourselves courage, to get to sleep, to be able to socialise or otherwise feel comfortable
in ourselves.
Soberista Despite years of getting into trouble from our drinking (true, at least,
for most of us), we continued to believe we could get a handle on it.
That there was nothing wrong with us. That the truly insane
decisions we often made were reasonable.
Soberista Do you still Think about those mood swings, where we used to (still?)
have a great day, go to bed happy, wake up in the morning
suicidal - or homicidal. Normal?
Soberista past experiences influence our current perceptions. The visual bias merges past and present stimuli, resulting in a perception that is often a distorted representation of addictive reality.
Soberista unresolved emotional insecurities like past hurts can lead to self-sabotaging relapsing behaviors.
Have you noticed that in your recovery you’re constantly seeking reassurance and validation from others?
Have you noticed that you’re constantly seeking reassurance and validation from others?
Soberista It’s true, from seeking constant validation to avoiding vulnerability, certain behaviors hold us back from our true recovery without us even knowing.
Soberistas Did you know that our dissociative insecurities can dictate our actions, shaping our relationships and self-perception?
Soberista How you unwind your day can make a great difference in your serenity’s brain health. Yoga can help you reduce stress which can in turn improve your cognitive function
A morning Soberista ritual that can improve your brain health is practicing asanas that improve blood flow to the brain and bring clarity. Practice such Yoga asanas can awaken your senses.
Soberista & Mindfulness can bring clarity and peace at the same time. When you are more aware of the present moment, your mind is at ease, and this helps you focus on a task well. Start your day with a few minutes of mindfulness meditation. Sit in a comfortable posture with your eyes closed and focus on your breath. This practice calms the mind, reduces mental chatter, and sets a positive tone for the day ahead.

Family members and friends commonly harden their hearts out of frustration with a loved one's self-destructive behavior.
Recovery reveals the degree to which addiction, or being in a close relationship with an addict, has altered someone's personality.
Common effects of addiction on personality are self-centeredness, irresponsibility, and blaming people, places, and things for their suffering.
It may sound weird, but thinking about yourself as a lobster could be the perfect way to ease yourself into the sober year ahead.
Only when the underlying causes of addiction are identified and appropriately addressed can it be successfully treated
Addiction can biochemically highjack the brain’s normal functioning.
If a substance or activity helps a person avoid confronting painful feelings, it’s all too easy for it to become habitual.
