A review of Heathers - The Musical at Milton Keynes Theatre by Breakfast on Broadway's Sarah-Jayne

This deliciously dark play proves what I always say: If you add a fun soundtrack, even the darkest themes make for a great night!

Meet Veronica, a nobody who is desperate to be a somebody. Not just anybody though, a Heather. The untouchable. When Veronica (played to perfection by Jenna Innes) becomes a Heather, she thinks all of her prayers have been answered. When she falls for JD, she realises that the wrong deity may have been listening.

As a die-hard fan of the soundtrack, I thought I knew what I was going to see. My god, I was wrong. This musical is not for the faint hearted, or easily upset. It contains themes of suicide, murder, and worst of all - the trauma of reliving your high school days with those girls (be honest, a few came to mind!)

JD is tantalisingly twisted. I loved Christian Slater in the film, Jamie Muscato in my first exposure to Heathers but Keelan Mcauley was a new level of dark. My friend actually said, 'he is terrifying, isn't he' during 'Meant to be Yours'. There was a rawness to his singing that made your heart quicken as the darkness took over.

Heather Chandler is the Queen of mean (move over Regina George). The Me Inside of Me made me fall in love with her character as she came to terms with her death, and I looked forward to her apparitions as the show goes down an increasingly evil path. In her passing, Heather Duke (Sedona Sky) takes her place...and you realise Heather C was mean, but Heather D was truly evil. Daisy Twells just made me want to hug her. She was bad by association but was desperate to not be!

With a play this dark, the comedic relief has to be top notch - Ivan Fernandez Gonzalez and Jason Battersby delivered as Remi and Kurt. Spending the second half of the play in their underwear and socks, everything that came out of their mouths was comedy gold.

If you like dark comedies like Little Shop of Horrors, you will love this! Schools in session until the 14th. I've come home listening to the soundtrack, and I could talk about this all night (but I have a word limit) so go see it before tuning into Breakfast on Broadway.

A review of at by Breakfast On Broadways Sarah-Jayne!

Where do I start...I'm speechless and in the best way! Hairspray is what theatre is about; passion, emotion, energy, and talent. Each and every cast member brought it in droves tonight.

Whether you are a fan of Ricky Lakes' 1988 film or Nikki Blonsky in her musical take from 2007, you will adore Tracy's positive outlook in this show! I saw Katie Brace tonight, who had me rooting for her character from the opening lines of Good Morning Baltimore. She was larger than life, unapologetically her, and - for me - embodied everything Tracy Turnblad stands for. My daughter now wants a Tracy wig (we will see).

Love interest Solomon Davy had large Zac Efron size shoes to fill as Link Larkin, but he had me swooning during It Takes Two. His voice was incredible.

I can't pick a star of the show because they all deserve it, but and absolutely smashed their rendition of You're Timeless to Me. Whether the laughter from them was staged or not, the song was moving and funny in equal parts.

I really disliked Gina Murray and Allana Taylors characters Amber and Velma, which just proves how exemplary they were at their portrayal.

The standout song for me came from who is making her theatrical debut as Motormouth Maybelle. Move over Jennifer Hudson because this stars version of I Know Where I've Been was sensational. Set Designer George Reeves supporting backdrop guarantees tears.

Multiple stories happening at once can become convoluted on stage, but not in this production. It ran seamlessly. Penny (.mcm) and Seaweed (), Tracy and Link, Edna, and Wilbur.. you were routing for them all. Each cast member delivered flawlessly tonight and received a well-deserved standing ovation.

My only criticism is the microphones. Shaniquah Notice-Morris was fantastic as Little Inez, but we missed some of her singing and lines due to a failing microphone. Still, technical things happen when live, and she handled it like a pro.

Hairspray is a must-see for the whole family. The casting, stage direction, fashion, and choreography will leave you breathless as you exit the auditorium.
