Did you know that equine acupuncture can be used in the treatment of many medical conditions?
Just like in human medicine acupuncture is an effective, evidence based, adjunctive treatment for the management of a plethora of medical conditions. We find it particularly useful in the management of musculoskeletal pain and it can be used to assist in the treatment of both poor performance and lameness cases.
Vet Jess Laffan is now offering this service either at our purpose built clinic or on your yard. We ask that horses are clean, dry and in an area with no bedding ready for their treatment.
Most insurance policies that include complimentary therapies, will cover acupuncture treatment if it is recommended by your treating vet.
If you feel that this is something that may benefit your horse, then please feel free to discuss this with your treating vet.

That HY-50 feeling! 🐎💨 We are so pleased to see little Timothy feeling fantastic following medication of his stifles due to struggling with upward fixating patella (locking stifles). HY-50 contains hyaluronic acid, and is a great alternative to steroids for joint medications in horses and ponies at risk of laminitis. Usually for performing joint injections on the yard we ask for a clean, dry area out of the wind, such as a wash stall or a stable with the bedding swept out of the way. As you can see from the photo in the comments, Timothy’s owner went one step beyond this and said Jess and Meg could bring him all the way into the kitchen!

Lancing an equine abscess
Have a look at this interesting case we saw this week.
Poem, a 8 year old sports horse mare, had a hot swollen area over the shoulder. The swelling was hot packed for a few days to bring it too a head. An ultrasound examination confirmed a fluid filled abscess 1-2cm beneath the skin in the muscle. The abscess was lanced under sterile conditions and flushed daily.
Poem went home yesterday after being the perfect patient and is healing well.
