There are many factors that can contribute to a slouched posture during desk work, which can also impact attention and focus during learning:
🪑 Core weakness
🪑 Desk or chair size
🪑 Visual motor skills
🪑 Sensory needs
🪑 Retained primitive reflexes
🪑 And more!
When posture is off, it can be harder for kids to stay focused and attentive, which directly affects their learning experience. Understanding the root causes can help us support better posture...and better focus!
📚Here, we're talking all about these areas...and what it means for writing and learning: https://www.theottoolbox.com/chair-posture-while-writing-slouched-handwriting/

Did you know that proprioception can significantly enhance attention, focus, and other executive functioning skills? Proprioceptive activities, like the options in the image, provide deep pressure input that helps regulate the nervous system. https://www.theottoolbox.com/proprioception-sensory-activities/
Heavy work input through the proprioceptive system can be calming and organizing, making it easier for individuals to concentrate and stay on task. Engaging in these exercises can improve body awareness, which is crucial for planning and executing movements effectively. https://www.theottoolbox.com/proprioception-activities-improves-body-awareness/
By integrating proprioceptive activities into daily routines, individuals can experience better self-regulation, reduced stress, and enhanced cognitive functions, leading to improved performance in academic and everyday tasks.
💚Image lists proprioception ideas: Wall push ups, hand squeezes, jumping jacks, animal walks, chair push ups, obstacle courses, deep breathing, weighted blankets, resistance tunnel, weighted ball use, therapy band exercises, burrito roll in in a blanket, stomping, planks, joint compression, therapy ball activities, massage, crab walks, bear walks, wheelbarrow walking with hands on tape lines to keep it slow and controlled, body sock, yoga, push ups, chair dips, squish between couch cushions...
Add humming to your list of coping tools! https://www.theottoolbox.com/sensory-coping-strategies-for-kids/

Contact - For families with disabled children shared this useful post about :
Planning for your disabled child’s transition to adulthood is always a good idea, even if they don’t use social services or have an Education, Health and Care plan.
A transition plan can help them to think about what a happy adult life would look like. And it will help in discussions with others involved in making decisions about their support.
Below are some questions to consider when making a plan — but you’ll find more advice, plan templates and toolkits on our website here 👉 contact.org.uk/transition-planning
Remember that your child’s views and wishes should be the starting point, even if you disagree or they seem unrealistic.
If your child has severe needs, they may not be able to say what they want in the future — but you’ll know about their likes and dislikes and how they communicate with those around them.
And make sure to be flexible! Ideas change, new opportunities arise, and sometimes things just don’t work out. You can revise your plan as often as needed to ensure it’s up to date.

At Helen & Douglas House, we offer Sibling Support Groups to help brothers and sisters of children with terminal or life-shortening illnesses. Many siblings feel alone and are unable to talk to their friends about how they are feeling.
Our Sibling Support Groups provide a safe and understanding space where siblings can talk about what they’re going through with people who understand. This support helps to reduce feelings of isolation and makes them feel less alone.
In 2023/2024, our Sibling Support Team:
🧡 Received 55 new referrals for Sibling Support
🧡 Supported over 50 children and young people in group support
🧡 Provided 1:1 support to over 40 young people
Your donations allow us to continue supporting the siblings of children who come to Helen & Douglas House and make a positive difference where it matters most. 🧡
