Calling all Teachers, Learning Assistants and ASNs….. is this you?
👇👇👇👇👇👇👇

If you are a teacher or a learning assistant in a mainstream classroom, then you will have had that really quiet child, let’s call him ‘Johnny,’ he sits and seems to get on with the work, however he rarely answers or asks questions in class and doesn’t seem to make friends easily. You worry that he may not understand as he hands in either uncompleted or incorrect work consistently.
Unfortunately for ‘Johnny’ you have another child, let’s call her ‘Jane,’ she struggles to sit still in class, doesn’t engage well with classroom activities. She can be disruptive almost every day, violent on occasion, throwing objects as well as shouting and cursing all day long and it is with this child most of the time, energy and resources are spent.
There are many children in school with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) who present with various behaviours. So, who do you prioritise first?
Do you go home feeling like a failure and burned out? You want to make a difference but unsure where to turn to for answers?
Are you one of the many teachers who work late every night, missing time with their families, just so you can put your lesson plan together for the next day? Are you constantly looking for ideas to modify the curriculum and lesson plans in order to meet each child’s level of understanding? Asking yourself questions: How can I facilitate learning in the classroom which will enable children to express their ideas and request help appropriately? How can I better understand the link between speech and literacy development? How can I manage children with social communication needs? How can I plan activities which support the development of receptive and expressive language in order to improve behaviour AND learning to benefit all children like both ‘Johnny’ and ‘Jane’?
The Elklan Speech and Language Support for 5-11s will give you the answers to all these questions and will help upskill you to recognise children who have SLCN in your classroom and how best to facilitate their learning.
Get in touch with Helen Hayes as [email protected] for more information about the up and coming course.

Play is the fundamental foundation for language.

In order to encourage language we need to develop a child's ability to play

Did you know that over 50% of our message is communicated through our bodies and the situation we are in?

Christmas morning can be a really exciting time, especially for children and young people. Sometimes though, excitement and over-stimulation can be different sides of the same coin.

Using visuals can be a great way of keeping times like Christmas morning exciting, but also predictable. They explain how a day will be structured, and in what order things will happen.

Here's one of our therapists' Christmas morning in a timetable. This timetable was made using the programme Boardmaker which is now available in many libraries across Edinburgh and the Lothians.
