Elizabeth Martland De Alwis Art
I am passionate about painting. I particularly love the versitlity & richness of oil paint on board but also love the portability of watercolour paint.
Subjects are anything that moves me, but mostly how light affects land, sea, sky, people & animals. Inspiring, friendly and relaxed setting.
I was thrilled to literally bump into the lovely & talented PV a few weeks ago.
We had previously spoken briefly on Varnishing Day as all the artists were leaving the & she had commented on my dress. It turned out she is Sri Lankan as was my dress. She took my card but when I didn’t hear from her, wondered how I would make contact with her again.
When & I met her at the PV we were equally excited to meet - it turned out she’d lost my card & wondered how we would get in touch. After chatting with Sumi for a while discovered he went to school with her nephew in Sri Lanka!
It is indeed a small world!
I hope to meet with Sumi again very soon 🥰

This Saturday I will be taking part in a Marathon walk along the Stour Valley in aid of The Brain Tumour Charity & Lizzie’s Fund.
I first met Lizzie in 2017 when she took part in a summer holiday portrait painting workshop I was teaching. She exuded such confidence & flair for her painting & knew exactly the direction she wanted her work to go.
I was extremely humbled to be asked a year later by her mum Sally to host a workshop following her diagnosis.
Here she is pictured beside me & puppy Ella in my studio along with her 2 cousins while painting their newly acquired puppies in the special Pet Painting Portrait Workshop.
I remember the fun we had trying to keep the puppies still (& failing) while painting, a memory I will always treasure.
I was very fond of Lizzie & I feel honoured to have known her.
I wanted to take part in this walk in Lizzie’s memory & in support of her family, especially her mum Sally.
The walk passes through the Stour Valley, a stunning part of the Suffolk countryside that is so dear to me & part of my life as a landscape painter.
I added myself to the page group because people have asked if they could sponsor me.
Thank you for taking the time to read this & l look forward to sharing some sketches I hope to do on the walk.

The words ‘delighted’ & ‘selected’ were all I saw at first in the email from yesterday.
My heart stopped briefly & I realised I was holding my breath.
I let out a very loud yelp of joy once my brain had computed what I’d read, well more like a scream according to . I then proceeded to run around the house, the dogs bouncing around my ankles, barking & probably thinking
‘what the hell’s mumma nutter on about?!’
.
Waiting so patiently for a walk…. but I’m busy getting ready for
next weekends
Boxford Open Gardens My studio pictured here will also be open to the public.

Do you recognise this view very close to Hadleigh?
Each time I drive along this road I find myself thinking I wish I had my paints & the time to paint its wonderful meandering S shape.
Yesterday I had an hour between appointments & found myself lured to its location. Pleased I’d actually remembered to pop my paints in the car 😊

‘Sleepy heads’
Watercolour on paper.
Painted soon after we adopted Doogal & Zebedee.
These 2 little dogs give me so much joy along with endless poses for paintings. They’ve never been greater company than the last few days while I’ve been poorly.
.
In preparation for this coming Sunday I have been busy framing a few prints.
If you live locally I’d love to see you at the market & show you what I’ve been up to this year.

Orange is my go to colour.
Uplifting & vibrant, no coincidence the base of my paintings consists of this. Making an appearance in a sizeable chunk of my wardrobe, I’ll sniff out the tiniest splash of orange on a piece of crockery in any charity shop.
This little orange striped jug had my name on it, tucked away in a shop the other day.
Now placed amongst my kitchen window sill treasures, I noticed these stark shadows cast by yesterday’s unseasonably warm low sun.

Cows at Shepcroft
Pen & Ink on paper
I used bamboo pen & ink for several years & drew this while staying at Shepcroft Farm with Great Uncle Alan & Great Auntie Freda, (my grandma Peggy Coopers sister).
I loved staying in Cheshire & at Shepcroft the cows & cats made great subjects for drawing.
One year the farmhouse
Golden Retriever had just had accidental puppies so my sister Katherine & I convinced mum to take one home.
So mum set off for Suffolk accompanied by a bundle of black fluffy fur soon to be named Bobby, as at that time we lived at Greyfriars in Sudbury & we loved the film ‘Greyfriars Bobby’ a story of Edinburgh’s most famous dog.
I stayed behind to draw & paint!

The perfect plate for this delicious beetroot, homegrown by , found in a great little charity shop in Hunstanton recently.
.
I photograph & film lots of things that end up in in these little squares as am constantly struck by the wonder of my surroundings, natural or man made.
Just spotted this little chap sticking to the kitchen table leg.
Think it’s a caterpillar but never seen one like it before!
Any expert caterpillar lovers out there who can shed some light? It hasn’t moved for a few minutes…. so perhaps it’s from a sticky garden shrub?🤣

This painting
‘Almost time for tea, Tendring Park Cricket Club, Stoke by Nayland’
gave me a real buzz when I created it.
I remember the clouds that windless day were perfect, hardly moving, an artists gift.
Every moment of its making was a joy, a rare experience for me as a painter. The paint seemed to flow from my brush that warm May Sunday afternoon when Sudbury played the historic re-match against Tendring Park.
My children were still quite little & I remember every so often they would run around the perimeter of the pitch to see what I was up to, a memory I will always treasure.
Exhibited several times, most recently at ‘s artist & makers show last weekend it is always a conversation starter, mainly about who was playing.
Following a conversation with
‘s show it was established that the batsman is John Engleheart, a prominent local gentleman.
The painting is still available & will soon be on display at .
Please DM me for further details.

Painting into the night at one of my absolute favourite places, ontop of a very steep hill.
It was so warm, a short sleeved top was all I needed…. oh & all the crap an artist has to have!
