Having good references really matters when applying for jobs—especially when working in a family home. Clients often want to speak directly to your previous employers to learn more about your character and work ethic.

My top recommendation is to obtain a written reference letter from your employer when leaving a role. Ideally, this letter should be on headed paper and signed and dated by your employer. This way, if you can't reach them for a reference in the future, you have a backup.

🍃 What Is The Difference Between A Gardener And A Landscaper?

Generally, a gardener focuses on the ongoing care and maintenance of plants and gardens, including tasks like planting, weeding, pruning, and lawn care.

A landscaper typically provides services that may include designing and installing garden layouts, hardscaping (like patios), and major garden renovations.

Landscapers often work on larger projects and may have specialised skills in landscape architecture.

Whereas a gardener would work in the same garden daily or weekly and maintain it throughout the year on a long-term basis 🍃🌺

So far most of our clients have come to us to help them find a housekeeper, with nannies being the second most popular!

If you could hire one member of household staff what would you choose? I think for me, it would have to be a housekeeper - cleaning definitely isn't my strong point 🤣

"Can I hire a nanny/housekeeper?"

Yes, however it can be a tricky position to fill. And, from my experience, it's impossible to get anything done with a toddler running around! 🤣

Nannies are experts in childcare and often highly trained and experienced. So understandably they want a role where they can focus on the children. Equally, housekeepers are often highly skilled and experienced in housekeeping and don't necessarily want to do childcare as part of their role.

It can certainly work if the nanny/housekeeper does housekeeping while the children are at school and childcare before and after, but it is important to think about the practicality of the role you are looking to fill. Sometimes clients find that it works much better to have a nanny and a housekeeper as two separate roles.

Clients have previously said to me "the interview went really well but the candidate didn't seem interested, they didn't ask any questions about the role..."

I think it's really important to go to an interview prepared with a few questions to ask at the end when the client inevitably asks you if you have any questions! Here are some things you could ask about:

❓ What does a typical day look like for this position?
❓ (For a housekeeper role) Are there specific cleaning products or methods you prefer?
❓ What is your household/family's weekly routine?
❓ (For a nanny role) Do the children have any specific interests or activities they like to do?
❓ (For a chef role) What are your family's favourite cuisines/meals?

These kind of questions show your interest in the role and the employer. Do you have any other go-to questions that you ask at the end of interviews?
