It's been 25 years since the first edition of what many consider to be the greatest book ever written on dance music culture - Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton's Last Night A DJ Saved My Life - The History of the Disc Jockey. To celebrate, WonK and Red Knot Collective are hosting an intimate book talk with the authors followed by an afterparty to mark what would have been the most influential DJ of all-time, Larry Levan's 70th birthday. I'll be hosting the Q&A / In-conversation and then Bill, Frank and myself will pay tribute to Larry and the music of the Paradise Garage (NYC 1978 -87) with what will surely be a magical evening of culture and dance music.
My own story with DJing started with an obsession with black music ignited by my Dad's record collection and then taken into the stratosphere via Trevor M and the Place Basement. Dancing and U.S. imports were vital currency at high school with kids exchanging bootleg cassettes of American Jazz Funk and Soul full of expensive imports that few could afford. For £4 though (quite a big chunk of pocket money around 1981), you could practice your dance moves to the hottest music, thanks to local dancefloor legend Morris Fox (who must have done a roaring trade in Fountain Square, Hanley via his Hitachi Super Woofer twin cassette 'ghetto blaster')
One crucial feature in those early days before electronic sounds held sway was the 'Jazz Dance' section of the night. The Place Basement would often attract impressive crews of 'out of towners' coming from Birmingham, Sheffield , Nottingham and even London. Amongst them were some of the most incredible dancers ever to grace a floor. Mostly young, athletic guys with moves that would seriously blow your mind. Feet were a frantic blur of spats, leather soles and white socks with outrageous spins, balletic leaps and dancefloor challenges which proved to be the precursor to the B-Boy circle which followed a few years later. These moments were up there with my favourite and most memorable ever on the floor.
