All parts made and in place - now ready for a glue up. It’s helps to be prepared as possible for a glue up (obsessively lining them up like this may just be a sign of procrastination - think it looks nice though!)
Delivery day for this garden table to . 🚚✨
This is special because the beautiful oak wood I used to make this table grew less than a mile from here.
I milled the tree onsite and transformed it into a garden table at my workshop (also local)
Working in this hyper local way, and understanding the provenance of the material, is a step towards treading more lightly on our planet, a commitment to reducing environmental impact while adding deeper value to the pieces commissioned by my clients. Something I have been working on and been developing whilst being a member of
Here’s to more meaningful, locally-sourced creations in the future!

We have another basket making workshop at Mushroom Works taking place on Saturday 4th November 🍄
This workshop is designed for absolute beginners as well as those with a little knowledge of willow basketry. It's a good opportunity for keen beginners or those with some experience to refine their skills, experiment with weaves & learn some tricks with follow on borders, & for beginners to learn the basics & make your very own basket to take home on the day.
So what are you waiting for!? Grab your ticket via our website:

Paying respects to this wonderful tree at Sycamore Gap in Northumberland.
The tree was cut down last night for unknown reasons by someone intent in causing damage and distress! An act of vandalism - murder - that makes me so angry! The police are now investigating and the place is a crime scene.
It is heart warming seeing the outpouring of love for this tree + really does show us how important trees are to us all in our everyday life.
This tree has always been in my life. I remember climbing in it when I was a child (recreating scenes from the Robin Hood film - it was ALOT smaller then!) I must confess, it’s the only tree I have ever carved my initials in 😬 (I apologised to the tree years later - I was a prickly teenager with a new penknife back then)
I hope something beautiful can be made with the wood to act as a monument to the tree.
Delighted to have delivered this contemporary standard lamp to its new home and a customer in London on my way home from on the way back to Newcastle this evening.
Most of my work is made to order - but I make 3-4 speculative pieces each year (of which this is one) and it’s always nice when it’s well received…
A few more pictures of my latest commission - a story telling chair.
The chair is made from a 200 year old oak tree from the Gibside 🌳 This magnificent tree was brought down during recent storms, i then cut & steam bent it into place to create this one of a kind piece.
Over the past 12 months I have been working with and a group of women who have been involved in the criminal justice system, to design & make this piece which looks at the value of story telling & the importance of it to help with communication.
You can now visit this magnificent chair for yourself at ⛪️

It is the .amaker and this week - I’m joining in so there will be daily posts about what I do, my furniture and more.
Day 1 - Meet the Maker
Hello again to those that follow me, and welcome to the new faces!
My name is Nick - I make furniture and I LOVE trees!
I’m based in Newcastle upon Tyne (North east of the UK) my workshop is at a place called - which is a group of studio spaces and small gallery (which I set up almost 18 years ago!)
Making things has always been my thing - ever since I was taught to cut my first piece of wood by my mum - as a child. I design and make all kinds of wooden wonders now many of which you can see here on the gram!
Hope you enjoy my posts - please Like. Share. Save. It all helps!
Good progress on this oak shelving unit today - this is going to be part of a home office/desk type thing…
We seem to be making rather a lot of these wooden wall boxes right now….
They come in various sizes and are an interesting alternative to regular shelving. They can be arranged to suit your space + loaded full of your favourite books [in colour order maybe!] or provide decorative way to store and display your prized possessions.
They are especially useful in small spaces where floor space is limited and are an incredible way to make your walls more useful!
It’s that time of year again to look back and reflect on the year.
2022 was quite a year - fun packed and fulfilling + I am thankful for the support and encouragement from you guys here on Instagram
Let’s hope 2023 brings just as much excitement and joy. There already quite a few tasty projects lined up + I can’t wait to share them with you all!
Satisfying end to the week with completion and delivery of this set of dining room furniture. It’s always nice to make the entire set + happy to have this one complete and in place with plenty of time to spare before Christmas! 😅
I’m taking part in - Today's theme is MEET THE MAKER + I thought it was about time I show my face on here + welcome my recent flurry of new followers.
Hi 👋 I’m Nick - a furniture maker and tree lover - I’ve been doing this woodworking lark for almost 20 years now! (Seems grange to say it + that sounds like a LONG time!)
I’m based in Newcastle upon Tyne (North east of the UK) at a place called - which is a group of studio spaces and small gallery (which I set up almost 18 years ago!)

Handmade Furniture - made to commission
Using the finest materials combined with traditional and contemporary techniques to produce furniture that makes a statement and will last a lifetime.
Nick James is a highly skilled craftsman. He’s an advocate of traditional woodworking techniques that are rare in contemporary practice. A machine can’t pick up a piece of wood, study the flow of the grain or make a decision about how to use it.
Nick established his first class techniques whilst attending the country’s leading furniture college, Rycotewood. Along with his team of expert makers, he uses the best time-tested methods of connecting pieces of wood by unbreakable joints and precise construction methods to create furniture that will last lifetimes.
