REALLY EXCITING DAY TODAY!

Kiln has always been a place that loves its drinks and the food. Kilns too noisy, too hot and too busy! And that’s how we like it (in the evening anyway). The balagan is what we like and there’s never enough! Today to complete our great management team we’ve just taken on Luke Riley to be our Bar Manager alongside Pablo, Haman and Benn.

Luke has done amazing work building with the guys and leaves with huge respect. We hope that Luke is going to do just as well with us in the Ouseburn.

Luke was in the top 10 Bartenders and he’s going to begin a drinks program at Kiln that builds on our pottery, Middle Eastern food and influences from the North East.

But right now he’s here just to be a banging bartender and look after you at our bar. Come down and see him this bank holiday weekend where he’ll be behind the bar making cocktails all night long!

Lovely to have you Chief! x

Hey!

Man it’s going to be a tough few days turning this one around and then opening on Saturday!

When Covid happened we divided up the restaurant with lots of barriers to make everyone feel a little bit more comfortable. Now it’s all behind us it’s time to take all the borders down! RESTAURANTS WITHOUT BORDERS!

The blue is going and the kitchen is coming out into the room a little bit more!

We are going bright and colourful for this year! Time to look to the future with fresh eyes!

31/12/2023

TODAY IS THE LAST DAY OF THE YEAR AND THE LAST DAY OF KILN IN ITS BLUEY BLUENESS.

We will be closed from 1st January to the 5th January to give kiln a good old paint! We are retiring the Hague Blue colour scheme in favour of something more uplifting!

We’ve got high hopes for 2024 being an optimistic year. It may not seem it yet but things are looking up! 😊

Wow sees she’s beautiful. All grown up

Merry Christmas dear friends, patrons and neighbours. The snow has fallen, Newcastle drew against PSG -although were robbed- and I hear Oli Wickham’s hair is grey enough to be Santa this year. What a marvellous festive season, come be merry at Kiln! What a time to be alive.

Hello,

It has been nice to see so many familiar faces at Kiln recently. It feels like Kiln is finally getting back to some normality now that Hume Street has reopened.

Kiln is still offering free pottery classes and remember if you buy someone a voucher for Christmas, they can take advantage of a meal and a get that free class!

In a couple of weeks we will be having a big ceramics drop and this will be available online with guaranteed Christmas delivery.

Keep an eye on the socials and we will release them soon.

Anyone else got that it’s Friday feeling?

We would love to see you down at Kiln. We’ve got cakes and seasonal coffees to get you in the Autumnal mood from 10am all week 🍂

26/09/2023

It’s getting very Autumnal out there and it’s getting to that time of the year where we light the fire bring down the blinds and nestle in for the long old winter. Hot chocolates, pumpkin spice, and mulled wine.

We’ve got a huge stock of ceramics which will be available online shortly and are ready to go. Juns been working very hard.

Our favourite is a little flat white cup with a handle. Keep an eye out for it. 👌

HUME STREET IS REOPENING.

It’s been something like 3 years that our street has been closed and it’s played havoc with actually keeping the restaurant open.

It’s okay because we are still here doing our thing and there are bright things just around the corner.

We are hoping the road should be open for the Ouseburn Festival which will be epic!

We’ve taken down our temporary road garden thing which was looking shabby anyway.

Brunch is on 10am and you can grab a takeaway pita sandwich too.

I’m thinking Kiln needs a fresh kick of paint on the inside. What colour do you think?

Brunch from 10am. The humble kiln staple the Shakshuka. I believe that although this is likely to be a Tunisian dish it was actually popularised by the mighty brunch scene in Oz. One of its first appearances in Newcastle was Starks Kitchen on Chilli road. However at the time 6 years ago Kiln stole it directly from the fantastic Ottolenghi cookbook Jerusalem.

Shakshuka is a warming eggy dish that brightens the spirits on any overcast morning! Probably why it’s been so well adopted by the North East.

30/06/2023

Sourdough, scrambled eggs, roasted cherry tomatoes and some merguez sausages from Charlotte. On every day from 10am for brunch.

thanks

Historic photo of Kilns kitchen when we started up. It’s nice to see the evolution into what it is today. But we’ve always tried to make good food with raw ingredients. Making our own enthusiasm, ceramics and teaching ourselves to get a little bit better everyday.

How Kiln came to be...

Free

Nothing in life is for free, or at least that is what I had come to believe. Well it turns out that when you’re a recently graduated art student unable to get a job the only thing that you have is the ability to give things away for free, but what I also came to learn is that doesn’t necessarily mean that you end up with nothing.

I came back from Dartington College of Art recently graduated in 2012, and the plan was to set up a studio. I think looking back, it turns out that that isn’t a particularly bad idea. A studio does a lot of things, and even thought you spend most of your spare cash in coffee shops, and very little time actually physically in the studio it doesn’t mean that the studio isn’t doing its job. When you leave art school the best thing that you can do is form something that is a symbol of identity and defiance. A studio is that symbol, the studio creates a physical and fixed measure of your success. It becomes more than anything else a sanctuary, so that after an 8 hour shift sorting post with five hundred other people in a warehouse in an industrial estate you can take stock.
