Let’s talk about WASPS and BEES!! 🐝 🐝 🐝

We always get lots of calls from customers regarding wasps at this time of the year. Invariably these will be bees rather than wasps as the wasps are currently setting up their nests and eggs have not yet hatched.

We like to pop a post out in May just to give a bit of advice regarding what you’re seeing around your homes and businesses.

You may be seeing ‘wasps’ going into holes in your walls.
These are almost certainly not wasps, these will usually be masonry bees:

MASONRY BEES are:

Similar in size and shape to wasps.
Friendly.
Harmless.
Have stingers but not generally strong enough to pierce human skin.
Have short life cycle, around 6 weeks so gone by early June.

You may see ‘wasps’ flying around the top corner of your property in May and June, or maybe inside a structure such as a bird box, These will usually be Bumble Bees.

BUMBLE BEES are:

Friendly.
Will only ever sting when under direct threat.
Will often be seen flying frantically around the top corner of a property near the gutter or often in bird boxes.
Will be gone early to mid June as they have a short life cycle.

If you see a large clump of ‘wasps’ or swarm then these will usually be honey bees.

HONEY BEES:

If you see a large swarm of bees sat on any structure then these will be honey bees.
Honey bees can sting but are usually not a threat when they have left a hive and split the swarm, although you should exercise caution.
If you see a swarm of honey bees any bee keeper will be happy to attend and remove these for you free of charge. We can arrange this for you free of charge.

WASPS NESTS:

We will begin to see wasps nest around mid June through until October.
You may see wasps entering and exiting an area or you may see the nest in areas such as garages or sheds. Wasps will sting when disturbed and should be avoided.

ADVICE:

If you have bees you do not need to worry, bees will only sting if under threat.

Bees have a short life cycle, masonry bees will be gone by early March, bumbles bees by mid June.

Please DO NOT pay pest control companies to kill bees. Most local companies will give you the same advice, a small number will treat and unnecessarily kill off bees rather than give you this advice.

QUICK ADVICE POST - Bees and wasps.

First job today and a familiar error.

If you have wasps or bees going into a wall or cavity space, NEVER block holes in the external walls.

People often block external holes, mistakenly believing that this will stop the wasps/bees from entering. This is not the case.

If you see them flying into a wall or cavity space then they already have a nest inside of there.

Blocking external holes will mean that the route outwards is closed so they cannot leave and will instead find their way INSIDE of your property via any internal gaps. This often results in huge numbers of wasps/bees in your property, as we have seen again this morning.

Lots of people do it, don’t be one of them!

A QUICK AND HANDY BEES/WASPS ADVICE POST FOR SPRING TIME.

*** are you seeing wasps/bees going into holes in your walls?***

These will be MASONRY BEES.
Harmless, friendly, no intention to sting, have stingers which are generally not strong enough to pierce skin. Only with us for 6 weeks or so every spring?

ADVICE: leave them alone, will cause you no harm and will be gone in around 6 weeks. Do NOT block the holes. If you block external holes then you may drive them into the cavity space and into your home.

*** are you seeing large wasps inside your home?***

These will be QUEEN WASPS leaving hibernation. They leave their hibernation area in spring as they look to set up their new nests. You do not have a nest to treat. They will be bigger than normal wasps.

ADVICE: there will only be a finite number of them. If you see them open windows and they will find their way out.

*** are you seeing lots of bees/wasps flying frantically around an areas OR in a clump?***

These will be HONEY BEES.

ADVICE: if they’re not in an area causing you any issues then leave them alone. Alternatively contact a local beekeeper who will be happy to collect free of charge, or call us and we can put you in touch with someone.

I’m not saying it’s entirely down to us but I do think that the stress of having a wasps nest at your home could be enough to have a negative effect on your performance at work.

Maybe it’s a coincidence but the wasps nest is treated and all of a sudden there are goals galore!

Superb wasps nest removed from a loft in Burnopfield this morning.
Remarkably this nest was built on the boarding in the loft and not attached to anything. First time we’ve ever come across a nest not attached to something. We were able to carefully pick it up and remove it, fully intact.

A whopper as well!!

ARE YOU SEEING WASPS GOING INTO HOLES IN YOUR WALL?

Good news, they aren’t wasps.

It’s that time of year again when the phone starts to ring with enquiries about wasps/bees. So we always like to send out a post with some advice regarding the bees you might start to see over the forthcoming weeks and months.

MASONRY/MORTAR BEES

You may see small wasp like critters entering holes in your walls, often in the mortar.

These are Masonry or Mortar bees.

They are often mistaken for wasps due to their size and shape.

Masonry bees, like all bees, will not cause you any harm. They start to arrive in early spring and are only with us for around 6 weeks.

You may see them entering multiple spots on your walls but they do not live with other bees in a nest. They are solitary, friendly creatures who would only ever attempt to sting if under severe threat. They do have stingers but these are generally not strong enough to pierce human skin.

Masonry bees are absolutely not something you need to treat and certainly not an issue that any scrupulous pest control company would ever encourage you to treat.

We’ve spent most of this week treating and removing wasps nests for our customers and this is going to continue over the weekend.

With the lovely weather we have had so far this summer the wasps have really thrived and the nests we’ve been removing have been far larger than is usual for so early in the season.
