How about THAT for a boat-caught bass!!! Alicia Brown boated this stunning fish yesterday while out fishing with Gwinear shop staff Stuart Beardsley and Sam Clarey in the Fowey estuary. Alicia fooled the 77cm double figure beast with a 14cm Westin Sandy Andy 32g lure in the Bluetooth colour. Rod and reel were a Savage Gear SGS2 15-50g and a Penn Slammer 2500 filled with Berkley Sick braid. The mighty bass put up an awesome fight in the deep water, diving hard for the bottom and giving the Slammer's drag a proper workout! Alicia's fish was caught outside of the part of the estuary where bass fishing is currently prohibited and she returned her prize to the water unharmed after a few photos. Class angling Alicia! 🎣

So it's been just over a week since our shop supervisor Stu Beardsley won our 2024 Open Shore Competition with this slab of a gilthead bream weighing 9lbs 1oz. Some of you may be curious about what gear Stu used to get the better of such a big bream - so let's have a look! Rod and reel wise, Stu used a Daiwa Saltist 11'6'' bass rod and a Shimano Baitrunner 6000 OC reel loaded with 15lb Daiwa sensor mainline. On the business end, Stu used a running leger rig with a 3oz pyramid lead and a trace of 20lb Amnesia to a size 1/0 Kamasan B940S hook.
According to Stu, the bream gave him a shy slack line bite and when he first struck into it, it began to come in quite easily before realising it was hooked and shooting off on a long unstoppable run. The bream used up most of its energy on that scorching sprint and afterwards came in with no real dramas until Stu and his mate Dave Noble attempted to land it. To cut a log story short, both lads got very wet after the gilt got stuck on a band of w**d and both said afterwards that they were lucky to land the monster gilthead. The fact that they were victorious though is testament to the reliability of Stu's setup and approach. Many gilthead anglers would shy away from using a comparitively lightweight and flexible hook like the Kamasan B940S for them but it's a pattern that has caught plenty of good gilts as it penetrates really well and is surprisingly durable - as Stu's fish demonstrates! 🎣

Please join us in wishing a happy 21st birthday to our newest member of staff Roy Moore! Roy recently told us that he was a big cheesecake fan so Stu surprised with him a Morrisons special and some raspberries to go on top - yum yum 😋🎣

Thanks to everybody who took part in our Shore Open Competition this weekend! The comp was a big success with 106 seniors and 10 juniors signing on across the county and the weather holding out nicely enabling anglers to target a variety of species. Our own Stuart Beardsley took first place with a massive 9lb 1oz gilthead bream followed closely by Garry Boyde with a cracking thin lipped mullet of 4lb 13oz.
The rest of the top ten was full of quality fish, a fitting testament to the skill of the anglers. Thanks again to the companies who supported the competition and to our staff who ensured that everything ran smoothly. We are planning on going even bigger and better next year so watch this space! 🎣
