The Mourne’s 💞
Beautiful aerial photo of Spelga Dam and reservoir, taken from a plane by Paul Toner. It was completed in 1957 near the source of the River Bann at the 'Deer's Meadow'. The Dam was designed by the Belfast engineering firm of R. Ferguson and S. McIlveen and construction was undertaken by John Laing & Sons. Building started in 1953, and ran into problems. As they poured the foundations on the bedrock they found that the dam was sinking, it was found that it was as much as 40 meters to the actual bedrock, after ground investigation showed that they had started building on large boulders.
A lovely video of spelga dam only a short 10minute drive from our beautiful holiday cottages 💞

This will be the 1st vehicular ferry across Carlingford Lough. The previous two ferries having carried passengers only.
The first ferry was recorded in 1185 AD and sailed between the medieval castles at Carlingford and Greencastle, then was followed by the Greenore Greencastle ferry which carried the first “tourists”, during the 19th Century
