π πΊππ πΊπππππ πΊππππππ- With Mark McBride.
We caught up with Kilkeel- based fisherman, Mark McBride to find out why a day at sea is better than a 9-5 job for him.
Here are 10 quickfire questions with Mark; number 9 may surprise you...
1. What age are you and how long have you been fishing?
A- I am 20 and have been a full-time fisherman since I was 16.
2. Can you tell us a bit about the boat you fish on?
A- The ' Stelimar' is a 12 metre long boat. We fish for prawns during summer and crabs/ scallops during winter months.
3. How did you become interested in fishing?
A- Both my dad and granda fished for a living, so it is something I grew up with. I have been going to sea since I was young.
4. What are the best and worst parts of your job?
A- The best part is when the weather is fine and the fishing is good; the worst part is when you aren't fishing but others around you are.
5. What are your future plans for your career?
A- My future plans are to complete my Skipper's Ticket this year and hopefully continue fishing with a bigger boat.
6. What is the best piece of advice you have been given regarding life at sea?
A-The best piece of advice is not to panic when things aren't going right.
7.Do you have a place/ area you like to fish at? Or is there a time of year which you look forward to as a fisherman?
A- It's hard to beat the beginning of the prawn season when the prawns are big and the weather is settled.
8.Do you have any superstitions around fishing?
A- I myself am not superstitious, but I know a lot of older fishermen like my granda who would be.
9. If you werenβt fishing, what other job would you be doing?
A- I always fancied my chances as an astronaut π π
10. Advice for any young person wishing to go to sea?
A- I would advise them to go out and give it a try for at least a couple of weeks, a lot of young people give up after a day or two, it takes a while to adjust but it is different from any 9-5 and more rewarding.
Thanks to Mark for his time, we wish you well as you take the next steps in your career as a Skipper.

Out and about with Sea Source NI
Brian Chambers and his daughter Jessica, joined pupils from Annalong Primary School last week to deliver a session about 'Safety and Sea Creatures.'
The class learned about safety in the water, wearing a life jacket, and the importance of looking after future seafood stocks.
A fun and informative session was had by all with pupils having the chance to handle live lobsters caught along the Annalong coast.
Thanks to Annalong Primary School for having us along.

π§΅The People Behind The Scenes - With TC Nets.
At any harbour, all eyes tend to focus on the fishing fleet. However, we were delighted to catch up with local Net Mender Terry Cunningham and see his skills in action as he mends nets at the quayside.
Terry learned how to mend and splice 47 years ago with the hope of getting a berth and utilising his skills at sea. πͺ‘
That day never came, but Terry has mastered his technique ashore, mending nets for boats in Kilkeel, Ardglass and Portavogie over the years.
The Mourne man makes this age-old craft look easy, but itβs a job which requires practice, precision and patience, even when up against time pressures.
With no sign of slowing down, Terry is hopeful these vital skills will continue to be passed down for generations to come.

Last week, in collaboration with Kilkeel Development Association, we had the privilege of welcoming over 100 visitors from Invest N.I. The delegates, representing some 26 companies from around the globe took part in a range of activities in the Mourne area.
Sea Source had the honour of hosting some of the visitors to a harbour tour experience. This began with a seafood cookery demonstration and tasting experience at Mourne Seafood Cookery School, guided walk of Kilkeel Harbour and tour of Sea Source Processing.
The group also explored G Smyth Boat Ltd, where they experienced award winning boatbuilding in action.
Brian Chambers from Sea Source N.I and David Hill of Sea Source Offshore, provided insights to the visitors regarding the progress and diversification in the fishing and Offshore Wind Industry in the Mourne area.
Other sections of the delegation explored the sights and sounds of Mourne with visits to the Silent Valley, Neary Nogs Chocolate Factory, Mourne Park and The Green Holiday Cottages. On location they met local business owners and experienced traditional heritage skills from the heart of Mourne.
A fantastic day welcoming the Invest N.I delegates and showcasing the Kingdom of Mourne to representatives throughout a range of industries worldwide.

After 35 years at sea, Jack Brown is βtying upβ for good.
We were lucky to catch up with Kilkeel fisherman Jack this morning, as he βredds upβ for retirement.
Jack, along with his brother Ian have been fishing for over 35 years together, 5 of which were spent fishing the β Lorna Dβ and almost 30 on the βAmity.β
Sourcing and supplying local seafood takes a lot of time and teamwork, but weβre sure there are lots of great tales to tell from your time at sea.
Jack, we wish you a long, healthy & happy retirement.
