❗️All about PAK Testing❗️
Extracting core samples from old carriageways can often have multiple layers of varying materials and ages. Below is an example, our client instructed us to carry out core sampling, depth measurement and air void testing of the surface course and a PAK test as part of a new housing development scheme.
About PAK testing:
The PAK test assists with the detection of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons which is a toxic material and when excavated there is a legal requirement for safety measures to protect workforce & the general public.
We use a PAK Marker Spray in a dark environment under UV lighting to indicate the presence of old coal tar in accordance with the ADEPT Guidance Note 2019/8 Appendix D2.0 PAK Marker.
Where Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons are detect the core sample will glow a bright yellow/green colour.
The PAK test is an indication not a measurement
The core sample can then have a further chemical analysis to allow for accurate hazard assessment under the Landfill waste acceptance criteria.
Contaminated materials are to be disposed of by a licensed waste disposal operator.
Our Coring team are doing an out of hours bespoke core sampling and testing of a supermarket shop floor this week prior to new drainage works.
We aim please and provide our services no matter what time of the day it it ⏰
📍We have been Bedfordshire bound this week
🏠 A house builder required samples to be taken along a stretch of road to determine:
1) Depth Measurement of cores and sub base
2) Material Types & aggregate size
3) Bulk density & Max density (Airvoid)
4) PAK test to detect polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in old coal tar.
We are delighted to have been approved onto the Balfour Beatty supply chain!

How refreshing it is to receive compliments for the work we do… sent today from a resident in East Riding of Yorkshire where we have been core sampling on behalf of the Council
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Would like to comment with regards to, the quality of work undertaken, and explanation from your team on the ground this morning, when taking a core sample from outside my bungalow this morning, the standard of workmanship, and customer care was exemplary.
In today’s world people are quick to criticise and complain, but not to congratulate, on a job well done.
I have to say, Dalton Senior and his Co worker are a credit to your organisation.
Well done.

🗣️ Let’s talk Micro-Trenching
• This is the most popular alternative to the traditional open trench excavation.
• it is a narrow trench in the road or footway to allow for fibre duct
• It is up to thirty times faster
• only 20% of the cost of traditional trenching
• minimal disruption to road users and local community
We offer two types of packages to test the reinstatements of a Micro-trench;
~ we carry out the core extraction using a 50mm diameter core barrel, measure the core sample to determine the depth and material used.
~ client carries out the core sampling and delivers them to our laboratory for a measure only test📏
❗️Should the client require the traditional method of trenching to be tested we can offer a full service. Core sampling using our diamond tipped 110mm barrels, depth measurement and air void testing.
