EDIT - this change is not simply due to receiving complaints. We have always had complaints to deal with. This change is because of drivers ignoring instructions, driving round road blocks and heading for the back of the parade to force their way through. We are still looking at how the parade can include Altofts for future years.
Normanton Gala Parade Saturday 10th September 2022 β Change of Route
Over recent years, we have been made aware of issues caused by the Gala Parade.
Normanton Town Council has acknowledged the verbal complaints and difficulties caused by the Parade, particularly for the people of Altofts who have limited alternative routes available.
We understand that the parade can cause inconvenience to residents and commuters alike.
Our view has always been that this is a once a year event and only a few hours of disruption that provides a great deal of benefit and enjoyment to the community.
Normanton Town Council believes that the Gala Parade is an integral part of community life and would hate to lose the tradition which has been around for many decades.
There are many local towns and villages that are losing their parades and we want to keep our parade going in the safest possible way for future generations to enjoy.
In 2021, like many other years, our staff and volunteers encountered very difficult road users who refused to accept the closure of the road.
Several of whom breached the road closure and tried to force their way through to their destination.
These drivers were heading straight for the back of the parade where dozens of children were stood waiting.
Our staff had to position themselves between vehicles and parade participants to try and avoid injury to those stood waiting.
This is completely unacceptable and is putting parade participants in great danger.
In an ideal world, we would like to find an off road location to get the parade set up before moving on to the road to keep disruption to a minimum. This is something that we are continuing to work on.
This year, we have agreed to trial a different parade route and with the help of WMDC and Welbeck management, we have found an off road location where we can safely set up the parade.
We will therefore start the parade from Haul Road β this is the road that leads to Welbeck Tip at the top of Wakefield Road.
This road is not used on Saturdays and will provide a safe environment to set up the parade before departure.
There is a small car park inside the site which can be used as a drop off area.
The parade will also be a shorter walk which will be more manageable for the smaller children who love getting involved with the fun and festivities of the Gala.
The parade route for 2022 will be:
Wakefield Road β from Boundary Lane Roundabout
Queen Street
Castleford Road
Haw Hill View
We anticipate that the parade will take around 45 minutes and will depart at 12pm which will give more time to people preparing their stalls on the Gala field.
The parade has never started at the Wakefield Road end of the town so it will be a good opportunity for the people from the Woodhouse Estate and Smirthwaite to see the parade go by.
We do understand that some people in Altofts will be disappointed by this news, but we are not saying its forever, itβs just a trial to see how it goes and we will continue to work to find a safe location in Altofts that would enable the parade to be set up safely.
The people from Altofts are of course invited to join the crowds in Normanton to see the parade pass by.
We are accepting applications for the parade and forms are available from our website.
