Several weeks ago an Earl’s Barton Marching Bass Drum was spotted in an antique shop in Weedon. Featured on the Appreciation Site it captured our imagination – How did it get to Weedon? Why did it leave the village, known today as Earls Barton? We know it is the drum of the Church Lad’s Brigade company number 1270 but there is still so much to learn. Who was the drummer with the drum attached to his chest?
As a Trustee of The Earls Barton Museum of Village Life and as family sponsors our instinct was the drum should be rescued and brought home not only to be on display but that its story should be told.
Please share any snippets of information you have as I prepare the historical storyboards for The Museum.
There was no time for detailed committee discussions – there was chats that the village club together, Chris Goozee offered to donate and has now used a 1955 photo to name many of the bandsmen. After a few calls of negotiation, we made a family decision to purchase the drum for The Jeyes Heritage Centre so it could be enjoyed by everyone in the village without delay.
It is currently in our home and as soon as we are able to open our doors again to our many collections of heritage and history it will be in pride of place, launched with a boom, bang a bang!
Visit England, Visit Northamptonshire, Visit Earls Barton, Visit The Drum at Jeyes ………..soon!

Tradition, heritage and local family roots have come together as The Jeyes Family, pharmacists since 1635, along with Steve Reid of Friars Farm, have today recreated Jeyes’s Northamptonshire Sauce, originally produced and sold by Philadelphus Jeyes at 6 The Drapery, Northampton.
The new sauce is a unique flavour and as the original advert circa 1835 states, ‘imparts the most exquisite taste’
