CRAFTING COMPOST FOR A SUSTAINABLE TOMORROW
š± Making compost is a process that involves layering organic materials and allowing them to decompose over time. Hereās a basic guide to making compost:
š 1. Select a dry, well-drained spot for your compost pile or bin. It should be easily accessible yet not too close to your home, as compost can attract insects and wildlife.
šš2. Collect a mix of āgreensā (nitrogen-rich materials like fruit and vegetable scraps, grass clippings, coffee grounds) and ābrownsā (carbon-rich materials like dry leaves, straw, shredded paper, cardboard).
šļø3. Start with a layer of browns at the bottom of your compost pile or bin to improve aeration and drainage. Alternate layers of greens and browns, aiming for a balance of roughly 3 parts browns to 1 part greens by volume.
š¦4. Keep the pile moist like a wrung-out sponge. Water it occasionally, especially during dry periods, to maintain proper moisture levels for decomposition.
š“5. Turn the compost pile regularly to aerate it and speed up decomposition. This can be done with a pitchfork or by allowing air to circulate by piercing holes into a pvc plastic tube and insert into the centre of heap.
ā°6. Composting takes time. Depending on environmental conditions and the materials used, compost can be ready in a few months to a year. Itās ready when itās dark, crumbly, and has an earthy smell.
7. Once your compost is ready, use it to enrich soil in your garden, potted plants, or lawn. Itās a nutrient-rich fertilizer that improves soil structure and water retention.
Remember, composting is a flexible process, and you can adjust it based on your available materials and space.
Start turning your waste into nutrient-rich soil for a greener tomorrow.
