Today marks one year since I took the risk of leaving a steady job to try something totally different, going self-employed and starting Golightly Garden Services!

Thanks to hard work, a supportive wife and family, amazing friends, contractors and of course my lovely customers, I have been rewarded. Each new job I undertake gives me the opportunity to learn and grow, so bring on year two!

Hi Everyone!

It’s been a busy couple of months for me, hence why I’ve been a bit quiet on this page recently. I’m so grateful for all the work and support during my first 10 months of running Golightly Garden Services, thank you all! 🙏🏼

I work all year round, so am able to help maintain your garden as we head into autumn and winter. In autumn I will be busy planting new borders for customers, along with continuing general maintenance such as lawn mowing, pruning and hedge trimming. During late autumn and winter I will be clearing leaves and debris from lawns and pathways, along with digging borders, building raised beds and other structures ready for spring planting!

Blog Post: Mediterranean Spurge (Euphorbia Characias)

I have noticed that the Mediterranean Spurge (Euphorbia Characias) is a popular plant of choice for many of my customers, and it is soon becoming a favourite of mine.

This flowering evergreen shrub is native to southern Europe, Turkey, and Albania, however, grows well in the UK due to being hardy down to −10 °C, along with being drought tolerant. So, considering the extremes in weather we have been having, it could be a great choice if you’d like to create an exotic vibe in your garden. Blooming from spring to early summer with vibrant yellow flowers, it can create an impressive visual display along with attracting many pollinators such as bees and butterflies. It also provides structure and colour in the winter with its silvery green foliage.

It is super easy to care for and requires minimal pruning of withered flowers after the flowering season (just be mindful to wear gloves when pruning due to its stems containing a milky, toxic sap that can cause skin irritation!)

After taking a few weeks off due to becoming a father to my baby boy, it’s been good to get out again this week!

Trimmed back some overgrown hedges and trees that were damaging a customer’s fences, along with propagating and planting some Shasta daisies (Leucanthemum maximum) that will shoot up and bloom in the spring, providing depth to a lovely corner border.

Blog Post: Planting Winter Hardy Onion Sets

Winter hardy onion sets, such as Radar, Snowball and Electric, can be planted in autumn for a July harvest. This can cover the “hungry gap” between the harvesting of winter and spring sown crops.

This year, I have planted these winter hardy varieties in my vegetable patch at the end of the autumn season, but there is still plenty of time for them to produce a strong harvest come mid-late summer!

Maintenance is relatively low and the crops can largely be left to settle in over the winter, however watering will be necessary if the soil dries out in the spring. Regular weeding in between the onion sets will support their growth and should be done carefully, by hand, to avoid damaging the roots of the onion sets.

I now have some fresh home-grown onions to look forward to in mid-late summer! 🧅 🧑🏼‍🌾
