Norovirus cases are unusually high for this time of year according to the UK Health Security Agency.

Norovirus, commonly known as the “winter vomiting bug”, is an extremely contagious virus causing severe diarrhoea and vomiting. The UK Health Security Agency has recently reported that cases in the UK are 75% higher than the previous 5 season average.

It spreads easily, especially in crowded settings. You can catch it from close contact with infected people, touching contaminated surfaces or eating food prepared by someone with the bug. Alcohol-based hand sanitiser and disinfectants cannot kill norovirus. Here’s what you should be aware of:

Norovirus is a nonenveloped virus, making it resistant to pH and temperature changes.
Alcohol-based hand sanitisers cannot pe*****te the capsid (protein shell) surrounding the virus’s nucleic acid core. Penetrating this shell is crucial in killing the virus.
Recent Warnings:

Norovirus activity has remained high in recent weeks and increased further.
Between weeks 14 to 17 of 2024, norovirus laboratory reports were 75% higher than the 5-season average.
If you have been off ill with the virus, do not return to work or school until 48 hours after your symptoms stop.
Also, if you are ill, do not prepare food for other people as it easily spreads from contaminated foods.

Successful Research Visit to Australia

The response RBT has received from a recent market visit to Australia has been fantastic.

In February our CEO, Adam Shay, visited Australia as part of the Innovate UK GBIP (Global Business Innovation) programme. The purpose was to sound out the market potential for our innovative new biosecurity agricultural products. The response he received from the market was phenomenal. In particular, poultry farmers were really keen to find out more about RBT’s revolutionary Protectus Air and Protectus Aqua products and they all thought these innovative products would be well received in the Australian market which is renowned for its clean and green reputation.

Protectus Air is an innovative disinfectant that is dispersed into the air via high tech nebulisers. It is completely dry, so can be used in areas sensitive to moisture, it’s less harmful to the environment than traditional harsh chemicals and can be used while animals are present.

Protectus Aqua is a new specialised water conditioner that removes biofilms from poultry drinking lines, improving the quality of the water and promoting good gut health in poultry flocks.

Airborne Pathogen Transmission Redefined & Air Disinfection

For many years, the World Health Organisation (WHO) believed that most respiratory illnesses such as Covid-19, Influenza and colds were spread by contaminated surfaces. Their theory behind this was that droplets from coughs and sneezes rapidly fell out of the air and contaminated the surfaces they land on; waiting to infect someone who touched the surface and then their face.

Plastic-free wipes with 99.999% kill rate? We’ve proven it can be done!

We’ve all known for some time that there is an issue with the overuse of plastic wipes, but until now, most biodegradable disinfectant wipes have failed to reach the same levels of effectiveness and microbial kill rates as plastic wipes. We’ve combined our biodegradable Protectus Viridis disinfectant with a biodegradable wipe material to make a product that is 100% biodegradable.

Working with the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, we tested our new wipes against dry surface biofilms containing multi-drug resistant bacteria, and compared them to traditional harsh disinfectant wipes. Multi-drug resistant bacteria represent a significant global health threat that must be combatted. The study concluded that the new 100% biodegradable wipes were extremely effective at destroying the dry surface biofilms. Indeed, they performed exceptionally well, and the study demonstrated that against harmful bacteria such as E. Coli and Mycobacterium abscessus they outperformed plastic wipes.

With the UK’s proposed ban on plastic wipes, it might be time to give the environment a break and move over to highly effective 100% biodegradable wipes.

Following on from RBT’s recent presentation on pathogens and antimicrobials to a group of keen young science students at Princethorpe College, we recently hosted two bright young students from the college. Ajunee and Josh spent a day working with us, learning more about how disinfectants are developed and deployed. We let them loose in the lab (under guidance!) to design their own disinfectant formulations. They now have a much better understanding of the time and effort it takes to successfully create scientifically advanced formulations such as our Protectus range of disinfectants.

The students also actively participated in project meetings for our poultry initiative that was recently granted a £50k Innovate UK Award. This project aims to improve biosecurity in the poultry sector while simultaneously reducing the use of harsh chemicals and improving yields. Both students quickly grasped the benefits that the project would bring to the poultry sector.

We’ve become involved with Princethorpe College science students as part of a mentoring initiative prompted by the Innovate UK Unlocking Potential Award. The award encourages successful businesswomen, such as our Founder and Chair Christine Brander, to motivate and mentor young people to become innovators of the future.
