Beale Street Discotheque - A Brief History.
Beale Street Discotheque began in the early 1970’s when four school friends having spend their after school hours at the now world famous “Roadmender” youth club, noticed some spare disco kit in the coffee bar and decided to have a go!
Friday nights were born and the music centered around Soul and Motown. The lads between them had amassed not only a lot of material but a proper knowledge of the music style. It began slowly but as the word got around the town that some “good tunes” were being spun, the crowd grew and even outshone the legendary “Shades” club at times!
As things were taking off the two main players Trevor Capel and Nick Haycock decided to broaden their horizons and take their music to the public. Although the original name of the disco was “Daisycutter” it didn't really shout out Soul & Motown! So thumbing through their record collection one evening they came across a single by the one of their favorite musicians Mr Willie Mitchell. The A side was called “Up Hard” but the B side “Beale Street Mood” was what caught the eye! Doing their research they found out that Beale Street was the main strip in Memphis, Tennessee where the blues were born way back in the 1930’s!
And so the name was born representing everything that Trevor and Nick were playing, and that those music lovers could relate too. From thereon in the guys went from strength to strength, playing venues across Northampton including “The Birds Nest” in Bridge St, “The Racecourse” on Abington Square, “The Salon Ballroom” and even “Shades”!
