As the year draws to a close I’d like to sincerely thank everybody who has supported us this year be it liking and sharing posts, tagging us into posts or just generally showing love. It’s very much appreciated.

As from today I’m afraid we are at peak capacity and all of us have full diaries next week, therefore we will only be able to get to existing customers as I’ll be working late nights to get to them and try to ensure everybody has heating and hot water for the Christmas period. First day back from holiday, straight back into it on a job with Alex 💪🏻

A commercial food client in Winsford needed new pipework installing and testing, due to their shifts and number of staff and machinery they would need to shut down we scheduled a Saturday shift. All the pipework is in and tested and there was no downtime or interruption at all for the company 😁

(Plus I love playing on scissor lifts)

As heat pump installers, I would like to share the following thoughts.

‘Heat pumps are too expensive, with installs costing 15-20k, compared to a boiler that’s only a couple of grand’ - That’s not an unreasonable claim in terms of the cost, however it does neglect to mention what’s truly involved. If you were to install a low temp, highly efficient heating system with a gas/oil boiler it would be more like 10-15 depending on size and requirements. With the governments £5000 grant, the heat pump cost is more 10-15k, as well as benefitting from 0% vat. A boiler being replaced with a boiler typically takes a day, maybe 2. Whilst we still love and fit loads of them, boilers will only ever reach around 95% efficiency. A well designed heat pump will bring in an average of 350-400% efficiency. In layman’s terms, for every £1 spent you will get £3.50/4.00 worth of heat output (or £0.90 via Gas/Oil) however the works involved are often a lot more laborious when installing a heat pump. This is due to the change in flow temperatures.

‘They don’t work in old houses, only new builds’ - at this stage, with todays technology, this is bordering on silly. There are plenty of properties out there where the existing system will be almost good enough for a heat pump as it is with minimal changes. It’s all down to science. Heat loss calculations > pipework calculations > radiator sizes > heat pump selection. The age of a property has no bearing on whether a heat pump will work or not.

‘There isn’t enough installers to fit them!’ - this is correct… at the moment. If the government (of any party!) really cared about this there are relatively quick and easy ways that the industry could entice high level installers through combinations of apprenticeships with proper checks, schools skills lessons and frankly increased grants and better quality management systems.

‘There’s not enough electricity supply’ - again, if everybody turned to a heat pump tomorrow, yes you’re right it would be very problematic. Is there solutions? Of course there is. Should we halt all efficient, green technologies that benefit everybody just because it’s a bit difficult? We’d still be getting around on horse and carts with that mentality.

Frankly throughout the whole programme Justin seemed to give off the impression of ‘it’s difficult, what’s the point?’, to me at least. I may have read it wrong.

As installers of all technologies both fossil fuels and heat pumps in the domestic and commercial sector we can give unbiased opinions on the best solution for each and every case, there’s no one size fits all with heat pumps, they aren’t perfect, they do have downsides and we’re not blind to some of the issues they have (capital outlay, changeover works etc) however at the moment they are presenting themselves as the most sensible solution as we attempt to cut our carbon emissions across the UK. We still fit boilers (they’ve a long time left yet) and don’t judge you as we hope you don’t judge us! The demand sadly is not there for us to be solely renewable tech, but we’re increasing our market share a little bit at a time 🙏🏻

We’ve also been very happy to welcome Alex back today from his short sabbatical travelling round south east Asia. We’ve missed him and his unwavering dedication to getting things done.

Update 2 of 3…

We are now heavily committed to the supply and installation of air source heat pumps 😁 ✅

We have undertaken and completed the HeatGeek heating mastery course (hardest course I’ve ever done) and have a real passion for designing systems to reach their absolute peak efficiency. There are a lot of often perpetuated myths about heat pumps, how they don’t work in old houses, how they cost a fortune to run, this is more often than not completely inaccurate and based off very old data + poor installations.

Massive thanks to Worcester Bosch for last nights event, we were so pleased to attend the Oxo building on the beautiful south bank in London for the grand launch of the new Worcester Bosch heat pump! Well this week we sadly bid Alex farewell as he goes off to travel South East Asia. It’s not all bad though, we hope he has a great time and look forward to welcoming him back to the fold in around 3 months time 😁

As well as that, we’ve had Daz join us this week. He’s hit the ground running and will help us form a fantastic service and repair division alongside Alex and myself.
