Our 'academic' creative project goes on...

What is one of the most challenging and complex types of sound synthesis? Arguably that must be FM!

So after testing our AI on a modern analogue classic like the Prophet 6, we decided to jump directly to the biggest challenge. There will be many neural network experiments to tame this beast.

The Yamaha TX7/DX7 still nowadays is a staple in the studio of most professional sound designers, and that's for a good reason.

Seemingly dead after the resurrection of analogue, the FM synthesis is still a unique type of synthesis, possibly the most powerful. Undoubtedly the most complicated. The legend goes that Brian Eno was one of the few able to master FM synthesis :-)

To be ready for this new challenge, we're preparing a new fundamental element to our product that will massively facilitate training our neural networks.

This is properly uncharted territory...stay tuned!

Things are getting serious, we hope to bring to the famous Web Summit this idea, born just a few months ago and now already with a strong small team making it real!

Time to start thinking about pitch deck, presentations and all those things that are needed for a such important event...

This is how our own Audioshapes AI sees and deals with sounds, something completely different and much more advanced than standard waveforms.

Second prototype is on the way!

What you see below is how Audioshapes AI 'sees' and visually represents three 'bad' sounds (the more red-ish ones) and three 'good' sounds (the more blu-ish ones).

We actually call a sound 'shape', something much more advanced and detailed than audio waveforms (what most sound design AIs use).

The second version of Audioshapes AI prototype should offer more nuanced learning abilities and more advanced interaction between the user, the AI and the hardware synth.

Don't even know where to start: probably from March 2021 when this company was started with the idea of joining Giancarlo Erra 20 years music career and his passion and experience in technology, with creativity and 'out of the box' thinking as the base.

A year after formation we're working with great companies like Kscope for Nosound and other music projects, local lovely businesses like Burning Shed, and on cutting edge projects like Audioshapes and Words.Tel.

It's so nice to see all the hard work and very little sleep rewarded.

The second part of this 2022 is going to be a very busy 6 months! 😎

This is the first track created using our Audioshapes AI!

All the sounds in this cinematic track were created using Audioshapes AI with a Prophet 6 analog synthesiser. This specific model was trained by Giancarlo Erra and reflects his taste for warm, cinematic and saturated analog sounds.

No studio trickery applied, the AI was suggesting creating and suggesting sounds, and the music was done with these, without any starting idea about how the track should be.

Just with the training the app was able to create all the sounds based on the artist's preferred palette and using an external hardware synthesiser.

Follow Audioshapes AI on all socials to be updated of the further progress in the following months: we're now preparing the second prototype that should be able to offer an even more advanced model and full interaction with the AI itself!

A new internet service (in form of app and website) to revolutionize how we can remember, and easily find when we need it, businesses or people.

Without having to remember contact details (often difficult or long), and without using search engines: no competitors for who wants to be found, no ads for who needs to find something.

It's been a very busy month at WS headquarters, including an unexpected but very exciting evolution on this project called Audio Shapes AI.

Although we can't reveal much for now, we got our first prototype working, and is no small feat as this is a new and never done before AI for music!

And it isn't a cold AI...we are creating a system to make specific artist AIs for sound design using machine learning and neural nets that artists can train themselves.

All of this while we keep accelerating even more on our new internet service/startup idea that we think could make big waves, and about which of course we can't say anything until we'll be ready for launch because again it's something no one though about or did before!

The second half of 2022 is gonna be very exciting and very busy, between established and new projects and ideas.

Our new and never done before use of AI for music suddenly started having its own life during this holiday!

Lovely weather means usually hay fever but also more with lovely Juno doing her favourite thing in the World...chasing sticks!

It also means more time spent outdoors and thinking about what's coming next. And that's when the best ideas arise.

Lots of things going on: contract being finalised with our bigger IT client, more mixing and mastering done, more music work done for next Nosound album, new web project started for a lovely local SEO agency.

And more importantly a new project that quickly evolved from an idea a few weeks ago into a small team hard at work, and is definitely the most exciting (and potentially bigger) thing we ever worked on!

The two modern polysynths in our studio (Prophet 6 and the mighty Moog One), used in virtually all the music that we produced over the last few years.

The majority of sounds on them were made with proprietary internal software written by using intelligent randomisation, based on algorithms developed over years of sound design.

The software is now being re-written in C++ for Win/Mac/Linux native compatibility, and the plan is for Widescreen Studio to publish it at some point in the next few months!

More near the release we’ll start looking for beta testers 😉

Latest astrophoto posted on our recently launched website https://theski.es ...if you zoom in, you'll see marked the landing sites of Apollo Missions 11, 16 and 17!

Obviously this is the Moon, almost perfect half lit, with terminus line passing nicely through some rough terrain and casting nice long shadows from craters rims and higher terrain formations.

Creativity can take many ways and many shapes. One of the less obvious ones for a musician is astrophotography. Although it's very much like audio mastering, a dark art, a midway between science and creativity.

The new astrophotography website by Giancarlo Erra at https://theski.es is now live, with a new image just published to celebrate the occasion.

The creative challenge was the logo design, a barcode that becomes an astrophotographic filter spectrogram (all the visible light spectrum with black bands that are the frequencies blocked by the filter).

The technical challenge was a website with many high-resolution images on the homepage, each loadable in full resolution with a click, all while keeping the page fast to load and adaptable to mobile.

It was a work of love, well worth for images that never fail to impress visitors who often wonder how those were taken from a backyard in Norwich!

It's been a year full of big projects, and more is already in the works for 2022. The idea of joining the creative world of music and arts with the technical world if IT services specifically tailored for creatives is not easy to communicate, but the works done are doing the speech.

From recognised top-level production, mixing and mastering, to creative artwork design and full online presence for your music or creative endeavour, we cover it all from start to end.

We celebrate this birthday with the official launch of the new website for Nosound at https://buff.ly/3tjuMbZ, where we also started a Bandcamp shop with some exclusive rarities, and all proceeds go to charity for the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.

After one year there are already a few music releases selling around the World on CD, DVD, vinyl or in digital format that were entirely produced by Widescreen Studio, together with their online stores, websites and socials 🎉 If you think I could help you as well, just drop me a line I'm always happy to have a chat with other creatives 😄

It's been a year of hard work behind the scenes while preparing for the big launch. Continuing what was started 20 years ago with The Bench Music, three new music albums were produced this year.

Departure Tapes and Memories Of Machines, both on cd/DVD-Audio and vinyl, licenses to Snapper/Kscope. Production, mixing, mastering, authoring, artwork and social media promotion was all done by Widescreen Studio.

This Night was also manufactured and sold online by us in collaboration with the great online shop Burning Shed, and it was done on cd and exclusive limited/numbered lathe cut vinyl that sold out within minutes.

It's been a year of hard work, business decisions, and preparing the base for the future. I'm proud of my collaborators Caroline Traitler (photography) and Chloe Eglington (social media management), it's a small but very efficient team.
