ABBOTS BARN, SUSSEX // The story of Abbots Barn beautifully illustrates how thoughtful design can turn a challenging brief into a perfect home. Despite the charm of the converted barn, it lacked certain essential features for its retired owners.
The solution? An annexe that fills these gaps while complementing the barn’s original appeal.
Designed by the brilliant BakerBrown and built by the amazing MB Cable, the annexe introduces more space, higher ceilings and stunning open corner sliding doors - making it a peaceful retreat with stunning views of the South Downs.
BLOG // Fully-bonded glass sliding doors can provide incredibly slim frames, but there are potential risks involved in the future - especially if you ever need to replace the glass.
Find out more about what fully-bonded glass sliding doors are and what the risks to choosing one are by reading our blog https://idsystems.co.uk/blog/why-it-matters-how-your-sliding-doors-are-glazed/
We are thrilled to showcase our project, in collaboration with Emil Eve Architects and photographed by the talented Taran Wilkhu Photography!
This project wasn't just about installing a set of doors. The glazing package involved a significant amount of design work and close communication with the architects to achieve their vision.
At IDSystems, we specialize in delivering complex projects with precision, setting us apart from many of our competitors. Our team's commitment to excellence ensures that every detail is executed flawlessly.
Check out the incredible results below!

The end result is a testament to a huge amount of work between the architects and our technical team to identify the most suitable solution for the bold geometric shapes and to match the colours of the frames to the stunning terracota tiles that give the project such a unique appearance.
The house features three sets of sliding doors, including one set designed as a sliding window, plus our high-performance Thermo65 windows and single doors.

THROWBACK PROJECT // It really doesn't feel like 14 years since we installed sliding doors on these two stunning new-build homes in North London.
On a leafy road in Highgate, this plot had be home to two semi-detached properties that had originally been built in the 1960s. It took the vision of and developers BLISS to see the potential for the location.
The identical houses consist of large open plan spaces on the first floor with views over playing fields to the front. With views through the house from front to back and sliding doors that open up to connect inside and out the house was a real trendsetter and looks just as contemporary now even 14 years on.
The left hand house is currently available for sale via The Modern House
FAVOURITE KITCHEN EXTENSIONS - No1 // Over the past 23+ years we've installed so many and on every size and scale of project, but in recent years it has been kitchen extensions that have really captured our attention.
We are counting down our five favourite kitchen extensions to provide inspiration for your next project, and we've reached the number 1 spot.
Taking the top spot is this amazing East London side-return extension by . With limited space and big ideas the kitchen extension called for some ingenious design to completely transform the back of the house and the connection between inside and out. A big part of what makes the extension work is the glazing, with a lean-to glass roof over the side return drawing light into the kitchen and a 3-panel set of sliding doors breaking down the boundaries between inside and out.
FAVOURITE KITCHEN EXTENSIONS - No2 // Over the past 23+ years we've installed so many and on every size and scale of project, but in recent years it has been kitchen extensions that have really captured our attention.
We are counting down our five favourite kitchen extensions, from period property updates to complete remodel and redesigns...all complete with a must-have kitchen island.
At No.2 is by far the oldest home in this countdown. With the timber-framed farmhouse dating back to the late 16th-century, this extension needed to considerately designed to be sympathetic to the main house, whilst creating the modern open-plan space that the family needed. The end-design by strikes the perfect balance with a three-panel set of sliding doors and a huge glazed gable underneath the extended pitched-roof.
FAVOURITE KITCHEN EXTENSIONS - No3 // Over the past 23+ years we've installed so many and on every size and scale of project, but in recent years it has been kitchen extensions that have really captured our attention.
We are counting down our five favourite kitchen extensions, from minimalist designs to bright and colourful family spaces
At No.3 is this amazing North Yorkshire renovation which combines ultra-modern design with period touches, including our Art Deco style aluminium bifold doors and windows. With horizontal bars across the glass to match the look of traditional steel frames, our heritage range of doors and windows combine the period-style with contemporary functionality - including the ability to create completely unobstructed open corners!
FAVOURITE KITCHEN EXTENSIONS - No4 // Over the past 23+ years we've installed so many and on every size and scale of project, but in recent years it has been kitchen extensions that have really captured our attention.
We are counting down our five favourite kitchen extensions, providing you with inspiration for your next project and ideas to transform your home.
At No.4 is this really clever South London extension by the brilliant . Wrapped around the side-return the striking angles of the extension maximise the amount of light that enters the kitchen and living area, creating an ultra-modern space within a period property. The four-panel set of sliding doors are designed to create the largest possible opening and the frames of the doors are matched to the part-gable above to ensure a neat and tidy finish.
FAVOURITE KITCHEN EXTENSIONS - No5 // Over the past 23+ years we've installed so many and on every size and scale of project, but in recent years it has been kitchen extensions that have really captured our attention.
We are counting down our five favourite kitchen extensions, which range in scale and design from modest urban terraced homes to stunning open-plan family spaces.
At No.5 is this painstaking renovation and remodel of a townhouse in Primrose Hill in London. From an empty shell of a house to an ultra-modern family home, the transformation of this project was incredible. At the back of the house a basement was excavated, and extension added and the whole ground floor knocked through to create a large open-plan kitchen with views out over the garden and Regents Canal.
ESSEX HOME // It has been another incredibly busy year for our fitting teams, covering thousands of miles to install doors on some pretty incredible projects, including this stylish new-build home by the amazing Mustard Architects.
Set in the Essex countryside this cleverly designed home features and internal courtyard garden, with sliding doors providing a connection all the way through the open-plan kitchen, breaking down the boundaries between inside and out and filling the living spaces with natural light.
The team at IDSystems would like to wish all our customers, suppliers and partners a Merry Christmas and a healthy and Happy New Year. Our offices are now closed for the festive break but we will be back on Tuesday 2nd January to continue working on some really amazing projects that we can't wait to share with you in 2024.
COMPLYING WITH BUILDING REGS // The changes to Building Regs that came into force last year have had an impact on the design of homes and it has been fascinating working with architects as they find solutions to allow them to continue to maximise the amount of glass they include within their designs, whilst complying with Part O of Regs.
Part O covers the mitigation of overheating which, particularly in London, means additional design features are often needed on south facing elevations to prevent rooms from overheating.
This has led to numerous innovations and clever design hacks, with brise soleil and overhangs being increasingly incorporated into plans, cutting out direct sunlight when the sun is at its highest (and hottest) in the summer months.
Incorporating design features on homes has enabled architects to continue to maximise the amount of glazing they design into new-build homes, creating the style and aesthetic required to meet their clients’ brief whilst complying with performance standards required by Regs.
OPEN CORNER SLIDING DOORS // It is crazy to think that it is more than 20 years since we first installed an open corner set of doors. In that time the design of homes and door technology has moved on so far - but the principle remains the same.
By incorporating the lock keep into a moveable corner post it is possible to completely open up the corner of an extension, making it look like the roof floats above the aperture whilst creating panoramic views out into the garden.
This amazing design by Coleman Anderson Architects in Kent combines an open corner with a pocket door system, with the panel on the right of the corner sliding completely into a pocket behind the wall to create a stunning opening.

KEEP THE OUTSIDE OUT // All summer long we talk about bringing the outside in because our bifold and sliding doors are perfect for opening up so that you can step out into your garden in warm summer sunshine.
The issue is that the British climate means that the glazed doors you choose have to be good all year around, not just for summer...which means they need to be able to cope with heavy rain and driving winds.
That is why IDSystems doors are subjected to independent weather performance testing, measuring how well the doors stand up to water, air and wind load in physical laboratory tests.
Our sliding and bifold doors are tested to severe weather rating standards, with our SUNFLEX bifold doors offering the highest standards of protection of any folding door on the market - ensuring complete peace of mind, whether you live in an urban environment or the most exposed rural area.
For more information about how weather tight our doors are visit https://idsystems.co.uk/blog/u-values-sightlines-and-weather-ratings/
ALUMINIUM WINDOWS // Aluminium doors and windows have come a long way since the 80s. Where once they were forged from a single piece of metal, now the inner and outer frames are separated by a polyamide thermal break which prevents cold-bridging.
This means the temperature outside can drop below freezing but the inner face of the door and window will remain at room temperature - preventing the build-up of condensation that previous generations of aluminium doors and windows became synonymous for.
With narrow frames and unrivalled innate strength, today aluminium windows are ideal for maximising the amount of glass - ideal for capturing a view like this out of your kitchen window!

After 23+ years of manufacturing and installing some of the most innovative and glazing solutions available we’ve truly learnt the benefits of finding partnerships and building relationships that work, as is the case with Compact Crane Services.
As the projects we’ve worked on become ever more complex and as architects and homeowners push the boundaries of what can be achieved, we’ve had to adapt and learn with them.
Finding a crane partner who can handle pretty much everything we have ever demanded of them has been invaluable to our operations and fitting teams as well as to our customers.
INDEPENDENT NON-CONNECTED PANELS
"Our award-winning vistaline slide and turn door system is completely unique. There is simply nothing else like it on the market."
Designed with independent, non-connected panels that slide and stack to one end of the opening, vistaline provides the narrow sightlines of a sliding door with the ability to stack the doors to one end to create an unobstructed opening - just like bifolds.
With a patented flipper seals in the track which create an effective weather seal between the track and the panels when closed - but rotate to create a completely flush finish when open - the system has proven a hugely popular option for homeowners struggling to choose between bifolds or sliders.

ACHIEVING A HOMES' POTENTIAL // This incredible renovation and remodel project in Kent was designed by the amazing Coleman Anderson Architects, transforming a tired house into a stunning contemporary home.
From box shaped rooms to large open plan spaces and from gloomy corners to a bright and vibrant living areas, this single storey extension is an amazing example of what can be achieved.
The house features two sets of sliding doors with incredibly narrow 20mm frames that draw light into the house and provide uninterrupted views out. The real wow-factor comes from the sliding doors which slide back to create a post-free corner with the panels on the return sliding into a pocket in the wall to allow for panoramic views out into the garden.
We've got lots more photos of this project to come but a huge thank you to Mikey Reed his efforts on capturing the photos.

SCHOOL HOUSE // So often sliding doors are seen as a solution for ultra-modern homes and extensions, but over the years we've proved that they can work on any style and type of project.
This stylish extension to The School House was designed by the incredible team at Challinor Hitchcock-Yoo Architects, with the owners wanting to upgrade their historic home to create more space and to make better use of the fantastic views over the meadow and fields.
The project saw the removal of an old lean-to timber framed conservatory and extension, replacing it with a porcelain clad extension that contrasts, yet compliments the existing structure of the house as well as the historic backdrop.
To make the most of the views, the designed called for a 3-panel set of sliding doors which large panes of glass and minimal frames allowing for almost completely uninterrupted views out.
