A lot of love went into transforming these battered, plaster covered, glue sprayed treads and risers, into the Stairway to Heaven (or upstairs) that you see before you...
It goes without saying that rule number one is always 'Prep hard, paint easy' but that's not to say we didn't have a little help from Zinsser UK primers, Toupret UK fillers, INDASA Abrasives UK and Coo-Var Paints floor paints π€

Dearest Craig,
You never minded whether it was caulk, sealant, glazing putty, silicone or grab adhesive, you were always there, ever the stoic and stalwart companion.
We've been so many places, met so many people and caulked so many miles of skirting but alas, our time together has sadly come to an end.
Sleep sweetly now sweet prince and rest your sticky soul - see you on the other side...of the door frame.

Completely forgot to take 'before' pictures on this one but as you can imagine these walls were in a state after the client removed the old shelves, with holes past the plaster, back to the masonry behind...
However, with a little bit of know-how, some Zinsser Guardz and a little TOUPRET Rock Solid Repair for the deep holes (followed their excellent ready mixed fillers for the skim coats), this one is ready for the mist coat π

After redecorating the kitchen earlier in the year, we've spent the past few days refinishing the units which were starting to look a little tired by comparisson...
Unfortunately, the company who originally fitted and finished the kitchen didn't use the best products or indeed process, so for a number of reasons we've first primed with Zinsser Coverstain Deep Tint, before prepping and then finishing with oil based satinwood, tinted to Farrow and Ball 'Railings' π€

You get what you pay for and it's expensive for a reason... BIN for the win, every single time.
We use products on a daily basis, however the one we use most is BIN as in our opinion, it's the best for a huge number of tasks, notably stainblocking and priming. There are however a lot of people out there who hate it and I can understand why, however let us go point on a few of the common hangups the sceptics have;
1.) It's hard to use' - True. One of the properties of BIN is that is dries in 15 minutes (or less depending on what you're applying it to!) As such you have to be quick and not play around with it too much, meaning you usually have to get it right first time or it pulls. There's no easy fix for this other than practice, though you can do yourself a favour by keeping your product fresh & clean (see point 3) and getting a decent brush/roller (see point 2).
2.) 'It ruins my brushes' - Not necessarily. As above, because the product dries so quickly, it will kill your brushes almost as fast as soon as you stop using them. That said, personally I've been using the very same 'BIN Brushes' at least once a week, for nearly 2 years now with no problems. How? Saw off an inch or two of the handles and keep them in a screw top jar with meths. Admittedly, they're now at the point where they need replacing but only because they're so worn down, not because they've gone hard.
3.) 'It gets really thick' - It shouldn't. BIN is a shellac and the most important part of the product will settle to the bottom of the can, whilst the more 'liquid' components will sit on top and evapourate over time, with the result being a thick mess that's horrendous to use. I know for a fact that a lot of people just have a can of this kicking around in their van for emergencies and when it comes to using it, they'll pour out whatevers on top, leaving the shellac aspect in the bottom, further speeding up the stodgy mess effect... Always stir the can before every use, thin it slightly with meths if need be, then strain when necessary, it should go on like a dream.
Hope that helps anyone thinking of using this - Happy BIN day π€

Love giving a tired patio a new lease of life and our favorite products for this are always from Floorseal - First cleaned down and opened up the previous coatings with Sealer Residue Remover, then resealed with Black Limestone Restorer. There's a lot of elbow grease, weather watching and drying times involved with projects like these but it's always 100% worth it...
Patios aren't a cheap investment, so don't be tempted to cut corners on the finish by using whatever 'do all' sealer is available at your local DIY store - the guys at Floorseal are always super helpful, knowledgeable and can tell you exactly how and what to use on whichever type of natural stone you have in your garden and home π€
π
We've had a lot of people calling recently, concerned that they can't completely remove all of the furniture from rooms ahead of us arriving.
The short answer to this is 'Don't worry' - we use a number of INDASA Abrasives tapes, drapes and sheets to keep everything as clean as possible for you, as truth be told, we don't want to have to dust, hoover or worry about spray on your furniture any more than you do π

Sometimes there's no getting around the need for a plasterer, however sometimes all that's needed is a bit of TLC, albeit done in the right way...
These walls were previously papered, covered in units and in a pretty bad way but with Zinsser Guardz, Toupret UK fillers and a fair bit of elbow grease, they ended up with a better finish than some new plaster work we've seen recently. Finished in Crown Paints Clean Extreme 'Mellow Sage' π€

We sometimes get told "we've had a much cheaper quotation from another decorator", which whilst if true is great news that you should absolutely go for, however use a little caution and a do a bit of digging to make sure that it's not too good to be true...
Price should absolutely be a factor when deciding on a contractor to undertake work for you, however don't fall into the trap of letting it be the deciding factor - trades all work to different standards, using methods, products and skills. If you were buying a car and looking at two seemingly similar models but one was much cheaper than the other, you'd be a little suspicious right?
The thing with paint is that once the topcoat is on, you can't see what's underneath. The problem with this is that you can't see what products have been used, what kind of system has been worked to and what prep, if any, has been done prior to finishing, which if like this job, could absolutely zero - the gloss quite literally came off in sheets. No undercoat and the previous coatings hadn't even been keyed.
Whilst we're not the most expensive (we're looking at the "I'm charging double at the minute because I don't need the work" guys, here) we know we're not the cheapest. There is a reason for that however and what you will get for your money that perhaps you won't get with a cheaper quote is;
- working to the price quoted
- starting and finishing on the dates arranged
- a clean and tidy working environment
- answers to your calls and emails within 24hrs
- quality and experienced trademen
..and, perhaps most importantly, thoroughly prepping and finishing to a high standard, not just industry standard.
We're not suited to every project. We get that and it's why we very rarely work on building sites anymore. What we would say though, even if you don't contact us for a quote and just as a piece of friendly advice to anyone who happens to see this, is to check what you're paying for! Look at the quote specifications, look at the products being used, look at reviews, look at previous work and try work out why thequote is so cheap - there will be a reason.
There are some great trades out there, but unfortunately we get all too many calls from good people who, through no fault of their own, have found out the hard way that value and cost are two very different things... βΉοΈ
